Personnel: Randy Weston (piano); T.K. Blue (saxophone, flute); Benny Powell (trombone); Alex Blake (acoustic bass); Neil Clarke (percussion). Randy Weston leads his African Rhythms Quintet in this concert recorded in St. Lucia circa 2002. With alto saxophonist/flautist T.K. Blue, trombonist Benny Powell, bassist Alex Blake, and percussionist Neil Clarke, Weston revisits a number of his exotic, African-influenced originals, starting off with the turbo-charged "African Cookbook" and the haunting, deliberate "The Shrine." "African Sunrise" has also long been a part of the pianist's repertoire; this version begins with his powerful solo before settling down to a loping pace as the band enters. "Little Niles," first written for Weston's then-young son nearly a half-century prior to this performance, is still a masterpiece, though this introspective interpretation reveals new facets of this gem. Weston closes this exciting set with his hypnotic, driving "Blue Moses" with T.K. Blue switching to soprano sax. Beautifully photographed and edited with top-notch audio, this DVD should be considered essential for fans of Randy Weston. ~ Ken Dryden Randy Weston Live In St. Lucia Songs Live In St. Lucia Review

Live In St. Lucia
$12.85 Audio Mixer: Chad Clark. Recording information: 2006-2007. THE LORD DOG BIRD is a solo project by Colin McCann, songwriter and guitarist for the Baltimore-based indie rockers Wilderness. Far removed from that band's taste for spiky, complicated post-rock, THE LORD DOG BIRD is a sparse and largely acoustic album with echoes of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's skewed folk and country influences, the atmospheric psychedelic haze of Broken Social Scene, and the lo-fi confessional intensity of Neutral Milk Hotel. Highlights include "The Shedding Path" and "March to the Mountain." The Lord Dog Bird is the name given to this solo project of Colin McCann, whose regular gig is guitarist with Wilderness. His glittering shards of guitar noise brighten that band's sound, but here, the aesthetic is strictly lo-fi and noisy throughout. Along with the fuzzy overloaded guitars, the other ingredients in the murk are fuzzy overloaded keyboards and McCann's high-pitched keening vocals. He's aiming for a warm and intimate sound, but the tone of the instruments and the lack of melody and lyrical insight serve more to push you away ...
