Robert Rodriguez' critically callaimed film, also a fist look at Once Upon a Time in mexico, Director's Commentary, Bedhead, a 10-minute Film School featurette. This western pastiche follows the saga of a "mariachi" (Mexican musician) who wanders into town looking for work and accidentally gets mistaken for a hitman -- who just happens to hide his guns in a guitar case. While earning room and board for a song, a down-on-his-luck musician gets into deep hot water when he's mistaken for a guitar case-toting hitman in a small Mexican town. EL MARIACHI was produced by do-it-yourself Austin, Texas auteur Robert Rodriguez (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, SPY KIDS) on a shoe-string budget for the Mexican video market but earned a major studio release. Winner of the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. This was 24-year-old Robert Rodriguez's first film. He had hoped to use it to get Hollywood studios interested in hiring him; instead they picked up the film itself, and it became quite successful.
It was done on a budget of only $7000, and shot in 14 days.
A sequel, "El Mariachi: Corrido Dos" ("El Mariachi: The Second Song") is on the way.
Rated BBFC 15 by the British Board of Film Classification.
The laserdisc edition of "El Mariachi" includes both the dubbed English soundtrack and the original Spanish soundtrack, as well as an alternate track with commentary by director Robert Rodriguez, and Rodriguez's short film, "Bedhead."
The Columbia TriStar Home Video VHS version (CTSHV# 53613) also includes the short "Bedhead". Mariachi Reviews: "...A skillful, familiar-feeling hybrid of film noir and Western conventions..."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...A surprise package stuffed with action and laughs....The exuberant Rodriguez pumps juice into every scene..."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "...[A] wry sense humor..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...It sports Sergio Leone visuals, snarling stichomythia in the dialogue, and the highest hit-rate for verbal and sight gags since AIRPLANE!..."
-- Harlan Kennedy, Film Comment "...An enormously entertaining movie....Rodriguez shoots this story in a lively visual style that brings a lot of energy even to routine shots..."

Mariachi Movie Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) rivals "Fargo" in dark humor This low-budget film embraces and pokes fun at the wild-west style drug scene in northern Mexico. Gallardo plays a wonderfully innocent musician who is unwittingly drawn into the fray through a case of mistaken identity, and whose life takes a dramatic turn becuase of circumstances beyond his control. Perhaps the dark humor is lost on those who don't understand our southern neighbor, or those who are unwilling to put up with subtitles.
The subtleties of El Mariachi were lost in the glitz of the big-budget sequel, and Gallardo's gentle musician disappeared behind the glam of Banderas' cool and angry character. But at least something of the original was salvaged with Johnny Depp in the third.
I have found that most Americans prefer the flashy "Desperado" and good-looking Banderas because we are so accustomed to high-quality cinematography, that we are not willing to endure a low-budget film to get to a great story. We are equally unwilling to deal with subtitles or anything that differs from what we are used to. That is unfortunate, we miss a lot of fantastic movies and stories. don't!!! The premise of the movie was okay but the director's comments throughout made it totally boring. The comments could not be turned off so I had to turn off the sound and read the subtitles.
a perfect example of "you get what you pay for." $7000 certainly does not buy a quality movie. Submitted by tom (apo, usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

El Mariachi is the worst movie i've ever seen! When I was watching this movie I did not like it at all I hated El Mariachi for a few reasons. I had to sit there and I did not understand what the hell they were saying in spanish. And through the entire full hour of this movie I would just see the english subtitles on and on which is a real boring thing to watch here. What's better a real good movie with no spanish but english speaking language with some english subtitles by someone who speaks a bit of spanish from themselves? Or a really crappy movie with lots of spanish and english subtitles also in it you be the judge? So in my own movie review opinion here I'm giving El Mariachi TWO THUMBS WAY, WAY DOWN! for sure. | | Billy Joe Shaver Everybody's Brother CD (2007)
Mariachi movie DVD
$13.95 A Billy Joe Shaver album is always cause for celebration, but on this 2007, Grammy-nominated release, the outlaw country troubadour shines in a whole new way. Produced by John Carter Cash, the album features all country-gospel originals, half of them sung in duet with a laundry list of country greats, including the late Johnny Cash, old partner in crime Kris Kristofferson, and Tanya Tucker. Although the Christian-themed lyrics are utterly sincere, fans needn't worry that Shaver has gone soft on them. The music crackles with country-rocking, honky-tonking fire.
