Spain's Stigmato Inc. advises us "to move" and "chill out" on the lofty dance number "Upward Bound Experience." And that's mostly the vibe on this colorful debut. Pulling from jazz, house, trip-hop, R&B, and soul, the chiefly organic Reality Check is genuinely diversified. In the positive "Strive to Be Happy," a true highlight, Danna Leese sings "Don't want to strive to be happy/I want to be happy now," augmented by the dazzling flute of Terence Butler. "Tribal Express," "Percussion Suite," and "La Maison de la Trompette" (featuring the sharp trumpet of Matthew Simon) are instrumental groove-shakers, but Reality Check also instills a look at some cultural and social issues. "Just for You (Condemned Servant)" concerns the troubles of women in Afghanistan, while "I Can Hang" and "Begone" concern a girl about to leave her boyfriend. Stigmato Inc doesn't stray too far from the other jazz-house fusionists, but this is a respectable first step into the field. ~ Kenyon Hopkin
Stigmato Inc.: Danna Leese (vocals); Tito Rossell, Carles Sanchez.

Reality Check
$11.65 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet.
Although it took more than a year of concerts and promotional appearances, Michael Bublé's 2003 debut disc of swinging pop standards ...

| | The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs (2009)
Reality Check
$18.94 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, ...

| | Som Brasileiro Sounds Of Brazil CD (2006)
Reality Check
$14.79 To most Americans, Brazilian music means one thing: the Bossa Nova. But, as a growing number of Som Brasileiro fans know, the music of Brazil is much more. It is sensual, for certain. But it is also as exuberant and passionate as Carnaval, as mysterious and haunting as the rain forest, as sophisticated and urban as modern Rio---but wed to its primitive roots. Weaving together diverse trends in Brazilian music, Som Brasileiro (literally "Sounds Of Brazil") has a voice all its own. The group embraces traditional Samba, Bossa Nova, Brazilian pop music from the Tropicalismo trend of the '70's (set by such songwriters as Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil) and contemporary compositions from Ivan Lins, Joao Bosco and Milton Nascimento. While it is strongly jazz-influenced, Som Brasileiro's music also reflects the rich folk/traditional flavor that has made ...
