Eight years after its maiden jaunt, the G3 concert series continues to celebrate six-string excess for guitar geeks across the globe. The brainchild of legend Joe Satriani, G3 showcases Satch, his accomplished former student Steve Vai, and a wildcard support act. While the series has featured axe-slingers of a bluesier sort, the 2003 tour found the neo-classical king Yngwie Malmsteen joining the fretboard fray.
ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD offers an encapsulation of the tour's highlights. Setting off the disc, Satriani and his band offer an inspiring, and, at times, subdued set. Steve Vai is aptly backed by a supergroup of sorts, featuring his power twin from the David Lee Roth band, bassist Billy Sheehan, and formidable guitarist/keyboardist Tony MacAlpine. Rounding out the string-shredding trio of acts, Yngwie displays a command of the electric guitar that remains fearsome. The requisite G3 jam unites the three guitarists in homage to Jimi Hendrix ("Voodoo Child [Slight Return]," "Little Wing") and an amped-up working of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World." Not for the faint of heart, G3 is cause for rejoicing among the massive cult of instrumental-rock guitar buffs.

The absence of piano is significant--Waits's jazzy harmonic underpinning is entirely dismantled here, leaving only the most basic, blues-oriented structures atop which Waits hangs his distinctive poetic imagery, at once surreal and highly detailed. There's an overwhelming sense of darkness ("How's It Gonna End," "Dead and Lovely"), but there are also moments of pure unfettered glee "Metropolitan Glide," "Shake It"), which are often goosed along by Waits's son Casey on turntables and percussion. A perennial romantic, Waits does let in a little melodic sunshine on the poignant closing ballad, "Day After Tomorrow," but for the most part, REAL GONE is a deliriously wild ride.
There have been many incarnations of Tom Waits--the boozy piano balladeer, the arch Kurt Weill acolyte, the bold sonic experimentalist--but the one that pops up on REAL GONE is probably most akin to the raw, howling, modern primitive of BONE MACHINE. As he did on that 1992 album, Waits gets in touch with his inner Captain Beefheart on REAL GONE. Trumpeter Brian Lynch has often played second fiddle to his Latin jazz A-lister friends. Be it with trombone giant Conrad Herwig, piano luminary Eddie Palmieri, or any of the host of New York Latin jazzers with whom Lynch has collaborated, the most notable records that he has appeared on have him listed after the word "featuring." The Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet features a group of players who are similarly stellar sidemen, who have backed the biggest artists in the genre, but whose names are not often seen in lights.
