| | Deep Blue Organ Trio Deep Blue Bruise CD (2004)
Devos Groove Guitar! CD music
$12.29 Philadelphia jazz singer Lou Lanza had an excellent point when he asserted that jazz improvisers who ignore rock and R&B songs "are cutting themselves off from a lot of worthwhile material." Lanza wasn't suggesting that jazz artists should totally give up the Tin Pan Alley standards they've been performing all these years -- actually, he's done plenty of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin gems himself -- but he was saying that if you're going to use popular songs as vehicles for jazz expression, there is no reason not to interpret Sting, Billy Joel or Prince along with Harry Warren and George Gershwin. And if Deep Blue Bruise is any indication, the members of the Deep Blue Organ Trio -- leader/organist Chris Foreman, guitarist Bobby Broom and drummer Greg Rockingham -- feel the same way. While Deep Blue Bruise is definitely an album of instrumental jazz, only a few of the songs on this soul-jazz/hard bop/post-bop disc were actually written as jazz instrumentals. Joe Henderson's "Granted" and Broom's exuberant title track were jazz instrumentals from birth, but most of the songs on this 2004 date started out ...
| | Dr Lonnie Smith Too Damn Hot CD (2004)
Devos Groove Guitar! music CDs
$13.45 Hammond B-3 boss Dr. Lonnie Smith ends up on yet another new label with Too Damn Hot!, the follow-up to his thoroughly enjoyable -- if curious -- Boogaloo to Beck outing from 2003. This studio set places the organist in the company of two fine guitarists -- Peter Bernstein (lead) and Rodney Jones (rhythm), and alternating drummers Greg Hutchinson ...

| | Bobby Hutcherson Oblique CD (1967) Remastered
Devos Groove Guitar! album
$8.45 Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). However, the approach is somewhat different this time around. For starters, there's less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with one from Hancock and two from the typically free-thinking Chambers. And compared to the relatively simple compositions and reflective soloing on Happenings, Oblique is often more complex in its post-bop style and more emotionally direct (despite what the title may suggest). The latter is especially true on the two opening Hutcherson pieces, the sweetly lilting "'Til Then" and the innocent, childlike theme of "My Joy," ...

| | Charlie Haden Montreal Tapes CD (2004)
Devos Groove Guitar! songs
$15.59 Recorded live at the Festival International De Jazz, Montreal, Canada on June 30, 1989. Includes liner notes by Charlie Haden.
Recorded on the opening night of the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal as part of an eight-concert series paying tribute to Charlie Haden. While the other evenings all featured stellar musicians and wonderful collaborations, this one is special because it features Haden in a trio of players not usually associated with him: drummer Al Foster -- fresh from Miles Davis' band, and the late tenor giant Joe Henderson. In fact, Haden has subtitled the set, "Tribute to Joe Henderson." There are four extended tunes on the set, the shortest of which ...
