 the best OLD TODD FOOTAGE yet
hi fans i hope you are well. the only question on this is why did it take 23 years for us to get our hands on this jewel. forget the nay sayer above this stuff was filmed 23 years ago not last night. put your unit in stereo and turn it up. having collected every piece of todd footage i can find anywhere. this is the best oldest yet. his voice is so young and full and the playing bu the whole band is top notch. and a couple rare tunes make it better still. having went to every tour he has done this is a fine 2 hours spent and it also has a interview with alot of in site of the workings of the master and utopia. so get it now and enjoy these tunes again. take care tr fans

 Utopia from A - Z
By now 8 Todd Rundgren and Utopia concerts/videos have been released including “Utopia – Live in Columbus, Ohio, 1980.” This new DVD falls somewhere in between the best ones “Live At The Royal Oak” plus “Redux ’92: Live in Japan” and Rundgren’s worst effort – “Live in Japan.” With a track list of some 28 songs the concert covers most of their hits plus a few rarities from the earliest album “Utopia” (1974) to the 1980 release “Adventures In Utopia.” But Todd Rundgren has wisely added some songs of his own from regular solo albums like “The Last Ride”, “Couldn’t I Just Tell You” & his signature song “Just One Victory”, which by now must have been recorded in at least ten different live settings! In terms of picture and sound quality this is pretty much an average affair. The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix is unfocused on many of the songs. You can hardly hear the voices coming out from the center channel speaker and the LFE channel is barely audible at times. The video taping of this show hasn’t left much room for experimenting or at least giving the viewer a chance to enjoy the camerawork, with cameras in three or four fixed positions. After you’ve watched 3 or 4 tracks it becomes very monotonous. What you should enjoy though, is Todd Rundgren’s guitar playing. He really is a master of the instrument and his voice is in great shape. If you’re a Rundgren and Utopia fan buy it, but I would strongly recommend you to invest your money in the two above mentioned DVD’s as well.

 Utopia at its peak!
Great show! Very complete! There are 3 or 4 bonus songs hidden within. See if you can find them. Hint: "...Riders" is one. Current day interview with TR is terrific. Highly recommended for your collection.

 Utopia - Live in Columbus, Ohio 1980
Long-time Utopia fans are going to love this DVD! The "Adventures in Utopia" tour catches Todd and the boys at the height of their popularity and during one of their strongest periods of musical output and creativity. Although there are a handful of odd camera shots and slight glare from the concert lighting, the audio quality is well above average and the overall video quality is fine (for the period). The track list on Live in Columbus is amazing and Todd's energy level, musical chops and voice are in rare form on this DVD. This DVD is divided into three (3) Parts: Part 1 consists of material from the "Adventures In Utopia" and "Oops Wrong Planet" albums (with Faithful's "Love of The Common Man" breaking up the set at the mid-way point). Part 2 spotlights lead performances from each band member and contains a beautiful medley of 3 Rundgren pop classics "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference", "Can We Still Be Friends" and "Hello It's Me". Part 2 closes with a couple of Todd's most poignant songs, "Bag Lady" and "Cliché". Part 3 features Utopia at its progressive best with their most demanding and intricate material. The performances in this set show off Utopia's exceptional musicianship and gorgeous 4-part harmonies. The DVD (fittingly) closes with the familiar anthems that thousands of Utopia fans sang along with at the close of each concert during that period, "Love Is The Answer" and "Just One Victory". There are countless (recently recorded) concert DVDs that feature better video production quality but considering the fact that this performance was recorded 23 years ago, the end result is exceptional. In fact, I actually prefer the overall production quality of this DVD to the output from last year's Power TR-io DVD release, "Todd Rundgren Live in San Francisco" which was recorded 20 years later (just 3 years ago). Die-hard Utopia fans (with whom I have I have spoken) are absolutely thrilled that this concert footage was captured and is finally available on DVD. Considering the limited number of Todd Rundgren and Utopia DVD releases, I don't see how any fan will be disappointed with "Utopia Live in Columbus". Finally, there is a live concert DVD that captures the magic of Todd Rundgren and Utopia at the peak of their game! Sanctuary Records’ “bootleg series” provides both long time Rundgren and Utopia admirers (as well as the uninitiated) with a collection of DVD (video) and CD (audio) releases that capture this “wizard a true star” at his best and provide a glimpse into what makes this artistic genius so special. Do yourself a favor and add "Utopia - Live in Columbus, OH 1980" to your Concert DVD collection.
