For jazz pianists, there's a lot to be said for reaching your early seventies. If your chops have held up -- and that's a big if, of course -- and the enthusiasm is still there, that combination of knowledge, experience, and technical skills can be a wonderful thing. Barry Harris was 72 when, in August 2002, Live in New York was recorded in a Big Apple club -- the credits and liner notes don't tell which one -- and the veteran pianist obviously hasn't lost anything in the chops department. He is in good to excellent form throughout this CD, which finds him leading a quintet that employs Charles Davis on tenor sax, Paul West on upright bass, Leroy Williams on drums, and Israeli improviser Roni Ben-Hur on guitar. Nothing groundbreaking occurs, but then, Harris was never groundbreaking to begin with. Even in his youth, Harris was a follower rather than a leader -- a pure, unapologetic bebopper who, like Sonny Stitt on the saxophone, excelled by sticking with the tried and proven instead of pushing jazz's envelope. And on Live in New York, the 72-year-old Harris maintains that hell-belt-for-bop outlook on three original pieces ("Monking Around," "To Dizzy With Love," and the congenial "7-4-3") as well as Tadd Dameron's intriguing "Casbah" and Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight." Yes, the latter has been beaten to death over the years -- some would argue that there needs to be a moratorium on "'Round Midnight" (for younger artists, anyway). But because Harris is old enough to remember the dawn of bebop, one ends up welcoming his inspired performance of a great but overdone standard that Orrin Keepnews has correctly described as "the national anthem of jazz." Live in New York falls short of essential, although it's a solid, rewarding effort that Harris' longtime fans will enjoy. ~ Alex Henderson

Live In New York album
$8.29 These ten tracks, taken from radio broadcasts from the legendary Birdland in 1951, represent a particularly fruitful period in Miles Davis' development as a bandleader. There are three different broadcasts included here; two comprising six cuts in total were from June and September and have been issued in various forms on bootlegs over the decades. Four cuts, however, taken from a broadcast on February 17, have never been available in any form and it is these as well the marginally better fidelity of the entire set that makes this worth owning for Miles freaks -- and only Miles freaks. The sextet on the February and June dates included J.J. Johnson, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Tommy Potter, and Kenny Drew. In September, Charles Mingus, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Billy Taylor, and Big Nick Nicholas joined Davis and Blakey. The fidelity here is listed on the sleeve as "primitive." That's a nice way to say it sucks bad. These are better than Charlie Parker's Dean Benedetti recordings, but not by much. Soundwise, the best that can ...

Live In New York CD music

| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Live In New York songs
$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf life of this performance was far from optimal. Symphony Sid Torin is the M.C., rambling as always, making repeated references to Dizzy "Jillespie" and misidentifying Max Roach as Sid Catlett on "Salt ...

Live In New York album
$15.39 Both Keith Tippett and Paul Dunmall have extensive discographies, with tons of projects, some of them longstanding. And yet, the one ensemble that stands out for both of them is Mujician and their handful of releases -- well, a bit more than a handful, now that There's No Going Back Now can be added to the pile, four years after Spacetime. This single 45-minute improvisation was recorded on June 12, 2005, with all usual suspects in top shape. The piano may be a bit less assertive than usual, but that has no impact on the group's drive. On the contrary, ...
