Picking up the cudgel of dance music with a mish-mash of influences pioneered by '90s acts like Deee-Lite and perpetuated by contemporaries the Cooler Kids, Junior Senior add some flash to an otherwise colorless Summer 2003. With their debut D-D-DON'T STOP THE BEAT, this Danish duo packs a half-hour's worth of kitschy New Wave synthesizers, flashy surf guitar, and thumping funk beats into delightful pieces of ear candy like the Eurodisco "Move Your Feet," psychedelic nugget "Boy Meets Girl," and the garage-rock gender-bending anthem "Chicks and Dicks." Throughout these 13 songs, the tempo borders on the amphetamine-fueled, with chugging guitar and double-time beats framing the simple yet infectious "Good Girl, Bad Boy," White Stripes-like "White Trash," and aptly titled "Rhythm Bandits." About the only time the pace somewhat slows down is on "Shake Me Baby," with its neat mix of subtle string arrangements and mutated Motown beat, and the double-entendre-laced "Shake Your Coconuts" with its hazy overtones of Urban Dance Squad. Despite having more musical personalities than Sybil, Junior Senior's debut possesses equal doses of cheekiness and an unstoppable joie de vivre.
