BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is jazz saxophone icon Paul Desmond's homage to Simon and Garfunkel.
Originally released in 1970 on A&M Records, Paul Desmond's BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is the label's last release to bear the influence of producer Creed Taylor. Like Taylor's earlier A&M albums with Desmond, Wes Montgomery and others, BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is a complex blend of cool jazz, easy listening, and pop, featuring lush orchestrations behind Desmond's alto sax and Herbie Hancock's electric piano. Taken entirely from the Paul Simon songbook, the 10 cuts range from a hymn-like reading of the title track to a spunky Latin-jazz take on "Cecilia." The 2008 Verve reissue features no bonus tracks, but has excellent remastered sound.
Simon & Garfunkel's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' was the hottest album in the land in 1970, & Paul Simon's tunes from that & their earlier albums unexpectedly find a congenial advocate in Paul Desmond. Against the odds as determined by bopsters, Desmond finds something beautiful, wistful, and/or sly to say in each of these ten tunes, backed by Herbie Hancock's Rhodes electric piano & a set of ravishing orchestrations by Don Sebesky. Hancock's solos often reflect where he was personally at in 1970, with ideas transferred from his progressive electric Sextet. This is a Creed Taylor production in all but name; the sound, track editing, & production values are right in line with the A&M CTI line, but Sebesky is listed as producer, Taylor having recently severed his ties with A&M to form his own label. Polydor/Japan.
Personnel: Gene Bertoncini, Sam Brown (guitar); Herbie Hancock (electric piano); Bill Lavorgna, Airto Moreira, Joao Palma (drums).

| | Miles Davis In Person At The Blackhawk: Complete CDs (2003) Remastered; Box Set
Bridge Over Troubled Water CD music
$31.45 "Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste.
Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's old warhorse "Bye Bye Blackbird" and the easy-going ballad "All Of You," where he seems to particularly inspire a laid back bluesy Hank Mobley tenor solo. ...
| | Joe Farnsworth It's Prime Time CD (2004)
Bridge Over Troubled Water music CDs
$14.99 Drummer Joe Farnsworth has been the drummer of choice for many New York recording sessions over a dozen-year stretch prior to this CD, which is his recording debut as a leader. Having studied with two great drummers, the late Art Taylor and the late Alan Dawson, Farnsworth keeps things moving as he works with a variety of quartets and quintets, with bassist Ron Carter joining him throughout the session. Pianist Harold Mabern contributed the hard bop opener, "Sweet Poppa," which also features tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, a frequent collaborator on ...

| | Tord Gustavsen Ground CD (2005)
Bridge Over Troubled Water album
$14.29 In the proto-typical Scandinavian ECM style of modern jazz oriented music, pianist Tord Gustavsen follows the path of previous progenitors influenced by Bill Evans, forged by Keith Jarrett, and extended by the likes of Mike Nock. This is certainly late-night, nocturnal music, completely reserved and relaxing, ultra-melodic, calm, peaceful, and non-threatening. Rarely does a tempo move beyond medium, a dynamic ...
| | V I P's Complete V.I.P.S. CD (2006) (Import) Remastered; Germany
Bridge Over Troubled Water CD music
$26.29 Modern mathematics isn't quite capable of counting how many R&B bands existed in Great Britain during the 1960s, but like a significant number of them, the V.I.P.s were destined to win greater recognition after they called it quits than while they were together. The final version of the V.I.P.s evolved into Spooky Tooth, who enjoyed chart success in both Europe and the United States during their late-'60s/early-'70s heyday, while guitarist Luther Grosvenor became a member of Mott the Hoople after changing his name to Ariel Bender (he also received some less than flattering reviews from several young women in the documentary Groupies, but that's another story). Given their résumé and the obscurity of their catalog, one might not expect much from The Complete V.I.P.s, but this double-disc compilation makes it clear this band was better than the average gathering of blues-wailing Brits. Lead singer Mike ...

| | Ventures Play The Greatest Instrumental Hits Of All Time, Vol. 2 CD (2003)
Bridge Over Troubled Water CD music
$11.49 The Ventures' 2002 release Play the Greatest Instrumental Hits of All Time was a competent effort, and the same could be said of its sequel, Play the Greatest Instrumental Hits of All Time, Vol. 2. Once again all tracks were cut between 1996-2000 by a lineup featuring original members Bob Bogle and Don Wilson, as well as Nokie Edwards on some lead guitar (though evidently not as a full member, since he's credited as one of the "guest artists"). And again the song list leans on well-known instrumental rock hits of the late '50s and early '60s by Duane Eddy, Sandy Nelson, Johnny & the Hurricanes, the Fireballs, the Tornados, and the like. A few surprises, if mild ones, are on hand in covers of the obscure "Percolator" (originally an LP track by Earl Palmer) and, more particularly, "Cry for a Shadow," the George Harrison-John Lennon instrumental recorded by the Beatles back in 1961. Usually the arrangements stick to the straight-ahead guitar sound for which the Ventures are known. ~ Richie Unterberger
The Ventures' 2002 release Play the Greatest Instrumental Hits of All Time was a competent effort, but an inessential addition to their huge discography. The same could be said of its sequel, Play the Greatest Instrumental Hits of All Time, Vol. 2, though it's perhaps even less essential than its predecessor. Once again all tracks were cut between 1996-2000 by ...
