Freight Train Heart became a huge hit for Jimmy Barnes, and with good reason. It followed on directly from the blue-collar rock of Bodyswerve and For the Working Class Man, yet managed to create its own identity. While it may have lacked complete originality ("Driving Wheels" is a simple update of "Working Class Man"), Barnes managed to make this set of songs an instant classic, thanks to the strength of singles like "Waitin' for the Heartache." Slightly more polished than For the Working Class Man (but never losing sight of its pub-rock origins), Freight Train Heart nevertheless runs neck and neck with that album for the title of Barnes' best release. ~ Jonathan Lewis

Triumph's first worldwide release, Rock & Roll Machine, had managed to capture the attention of many hard rock and heavy metal fans (as well as some borderline prog rock nerds), but still many more remained suspicious of the Canadian power trio's similarities to that country's established elder statesmen, Rush. Highly ambitious, challenging, idiosyncratic, and confounding, Boys for Pele expands on the more experimental and progressive tendencies of Under the Pink. Amos frequently discards traditional song structures and employs wide-ranging, eclectic instrumentation in her music, while her lyrics seem to grow even more obscure, giving the album a very impressionistic feel. While there are certainly worthwhile moments, her experiments don't always work; some of the songs fail to stick, and it takes a few plays before many start to sink in.
