Sort of a bridge between Charlie Christian and T-Bone Walker as a guitarist, Saunders King hasn't gotten nearly as much attention, probably because his playing on these cuts is ensemble in nature, and he only stretches out in a couple places. The single most alluring track here is his vocal on Mary Lou Williams' "What's Your Story Morning Glory," which has a soothing, timeless quality. The key selections on this collection are also on the Ace release, Cool Blues, Jumps & Shuffles, which gets the nod as the compilation to get. ~ Steve Leggett

Born in Minden, LA, and raised in Houston, TX, Percy Mayfield came to Los Angeles in 1942 determined to succeed as a songwriter, and gradually developed into a nationally recognized recording artist. Four incredibly rare sides released on the GruVtone label in 1947 are presented here as a prologue to Mayfield's Supreme and Specialty recordings. "Jack, You Ain't Nowhere" is a swinging strut for unidentified sax and rhythm with vocal chorus and periodic bursts of gruff hollering. "Get Way Back" is particularly interesting, with Mayfield speaking (rather than singing) in an offhand manner slightly off-mike. This feels like a taproot of rap music. There is plenty of dark music available on CD -- Russian folk, grunge, Peruvian star Rossy War's cumbia triste (sad cumbia), Fiona Apple, Green Day singing "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." But the blues, like country, isn't simply dark -- it's dark-humored. The blues laughs in the face of adversity, which is clearly something that Lightnin' Hopkins, Little Walter, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Sonny Boy Williamson have had in common with Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, and Johnny Paycheck. And it is no coincidence that one sees so many smiling faces on this DVD even though Tail Dragger is addressing plenty of dark subject matter. There is no way that My Head Is Bald (which documents a July 16, 2005, gig at Vern's Friendly Lounge on Chicago's West Side) will be mistaken for an exercise in mindless, naïve, Pollyanna-ish optimism. One of the phrases that obsessive blues collectors love to hear is "previously unreleased." They're always hoping that a label will unearth a rare John Lee Hooker or Lightnin' Hopkins recording that, for whatever reason, has remained in the can for 30 or 40 years.
