For Tug of War, Enchant took a different approach, toning down its progressive metal stance and letting its pop sensibilities bloom. In a nutshell: less crunchy guitar riffs, less screaming from singer Ted Leonard, and more memorable melodies. Because these musicians are capable of fine songcrafting, that's what they focus on for the album. The title track combines a bit of everything: the thundering rhythm section of a metal band, a good chorus, and the prog rock twists and turns that stretch the song to almost eight minutes. But the album's best moments are found in the simplest, shortest songs, like "See No Evil" and the ballad "Beautiful." "Living in a Movie," the story of an unlucky man who can't believe his Hollywood-esque bad luck, has a sweet-and-sour taste that makes it stand out. The instrumental track "Progtology" has little to offer in terms of originality, but it has a certain retro charm. Keyboardist Bill Jenkins, rarely the guy to take center stage, unveils an impressive number of cheesy, overused sounds. Douglas A. Ott on the other hand lays down a strong guitar solo and also contributes some thoughtful lines throughout the album. Tug of War is a good effort. ~ François Couture

Tug Of War Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) PRIMO!!!!! OK, I know I need another dozen (100? 1000?) listens of this CD, but I can safely say now this is the finest one Enchant has put out. Lush melodies, rich harmonies, killer arrangements --- what's not to like??
Overall, this is a 10/10! This CD manages to take each one member of the band and showcase him...Ted's vocals are amazing -- strongest he's ever been...Doug kicks butt on that guitar....Bill's keys soar....Sean's drums groove...and Ed is all over the bass - tapping and thumping. Love all that bass!
Killer tracks are Sinking Sand, Tug of War, Progtology, and Comatose (if this one doesn't tough your heart and/or soul ya better check your pulse!) A whirlwind of music, reality, and emotion that is so tough to find these days!
Prog, prog rock, and prog metal fans alike will go for this CD in a big way! And go for the Lim Ed - you get a live cut from 2002's NEARFest and a very cool booklet!

ANOTHER AMAZING EFFORT!!!! This release proves how much these guys have grown as musicians. Ted's voice is just amazing, and Doug's guitar work is unique, taking you on a journey never wanting to return! Each song has its own life, taking the listener to a different place each time. Enchant...thanks for another source of inspiration, you have reached out to many of us. Keep up the excellent work! Submitted by a reviewer (Trujillo Alto, PR) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
So good, it's uncanny. I have a 12 disk cd changer in my car, and I don't know why. All I ever listen to is cd #7. Over, and over, and over, and over again...cd #7, cd #7, cd #7.
I try to listen to other music, and there's plenty of good stuff in there (including 6 other Enchant cd's that are all fantastic), but whenever I swap to another disk I only get a few songs before I start itching to hear Comotose, or Progtology...Tug of War or See no Evil.
This cd is the type of cd that grabs ahold of your leg and pulls. Only buy it if you don't mind selling a part of your life to surrounding yourself in it.
And yes...definitely get the special edition. The booklet that comes with it is just as good as the music, and that's no small praise.
And, of course, be sure to check the rest of Enchant's catalogue...Blink of an Eye is probably my favorite, but I love everything except Wounded, and even that's a darn good disk imo. Submitted by a reviewer (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
