Norwegian black metal vets Gorgoroth have long been an underrated band, never matching the critical acclaim of Darkthrone or Emperor, the sales of Cradle of Filth, or the legendary infamy of Mayhem or Burzum. Still, since the mid-'90s at least, they've had as much to offer as any of those bands (and not simply because the other bands' members all seemed to be dying or going to jail). With Twilight of the Idols, they stick to the sort of nihilistic, unpretentious yet still musically daring black metal that is their strong point. Whereas their previous album, 2000's Incipit Satan, was about halfway brilliant but weighted down by a few experimental excursions that didn't quite work, Twilight is all meat and potatoes, and it all hits the spot. Opener "Procreating Satan" sets the tone, combining hypnotic, Darkthrone-like minor-key riffing with fierce blastbeats and distorted vocals screams that approach the realm of pure electronic noise. Subsequent tracks find the band veering into classic midpaced metal tempos, dirgeful doom sections, and a few instrumental passages that might impress some as "technical" if they weren't also so musical and effortless-sounding. The production is excellent, too, keeping the band out of the black metal basement ghetto without getting too slick or polished. Twilight is less flashy than recent efforts by fellow Norwegian-scene veterans like Emperor and Arcturus and less obviously experimental than Incipit Satan or something like Enslaved's Below the Lights, but it works on a very direct level and is one of the stronger efforts by a member of the genre's old guard to come out in the early 2000s. ~ William York

| Twilight Of The Idols (In Conspiricy With Satan) Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) Original This is a very consistent, fast and original sounding album. The distortion on the guitars, and, well, lets face it, everything else, gives it a beautifully twisted sound. The guitar riffs are in a very late 80s Metallica fashion, yet still maintaining the traditional black metal sound.
All in all this is at least an entertaining album. Certianly one that has been revolving in my player since its release. Submitted by Kvalt (Wellington, New Zealand) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Relatively Mundane and Boring Album I have listened to this album over and over attempting to let it grow on me, but the album fails to do so. Nothing on this album really appeals to me, there are practically no memorable hooks or riffs to be found. The first track is just an annoying mess. The only decent track on the album is "Forces of Satan Storms". The rest are simply boring. I would recommend Gorgoroth's last album "Incipit Satan", even with all the irritating sound and synth effects. Submitted by Death/Black Metal Dave (Katy, TX 77450) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Very Solid Black Metal Album Heard about these guys and picked up this album as my first Gorgoroth purchase. Didn't do too much for me the first listen, but grew on me by the 2nd, and now, I'm a fan of the band and this album i consider one of the better releases in the last 3-4 years. I will say that i'm not a huge fan of scandinavian Black Metal, but these guys go for a more stripped down, less orchestarted sound than what i've heard from say, Cradle Of Filth (before the 04 album), Dimmu Borgir, or others. Nice guitar work hooks me in, and creates a gloomy, not unpleasant vibe. Don't expect a bunch of guitar solos tho, didn't hear any of that, but it didn't seem to miss that aspect, where some metal albums do. I'm anxious to get their earlier albums as this one was a winner. Not absolutely stellar, but solid as, well, metal, no filler tracks, no dissapointments, worth your time and money. I don't feel like writing reviews for bands that suck, or have filler tracks, or who've been reviewd 100 times. So far no-one else reviewed this underrated gem, what a pity. Buy this, and Exhumed's "Anatomy is Destiny" and thank me later, best, most underappreciated releases of 2003 i've heard. Submitted by rommel7thpanzer (New England USA) Was This Review Helpful? Black metal doesn't get any more dyed in the wool than Gorgoroth. Incipit Sathanas is a blast of prime evil that recalls the glory days when Bathory and Mayhem were busy conspiring to turn all of Scandinavia into an outpost of Hades. Flaunting the par-for-the-course Nietzsche influences on their ...

$23.49 Mail-order firm and reissue label Collectors' Choice Music has done big band fans a real favor by working with Sony Music Special Products to assemble this compilation of recordings from Sony's vaults containing vocals by Helen Ward. Ward was best-known as a singer on Benny Goodman records of the mid-1930s, but it turns out she sang on plenty of other sessions, too, despite a stop-and-start career that she interrupted as early as December 1936, when she was only 20 years old, to retire and become a housewife, a retirement (and marriage) that didn't last.
