| | Sigur Ros Agaetis Byrjun CD (2000)
Radiohead : 7 Television Commercials
$11.65 Two years passed since Sigur Rós' debut. By this time, the band recruited in a new keyboardist by the name of Kjartan Sveinsson and it seems to have done nothing but take the band to an even higher state of self-awareness. Even on aesthetic matters, Sigur Rós entitle their sophomore effort not in a manner to play up the irony of high expectations (à la the Stone Roses' Second Coming), but in a modest realization. This second album -- Agætis Byrjun -- translates roughly to Good Start. So as talented as Von might have been, this time out is probably even more worthy of dramatic debut expectations. Indeed, Agætis Byrjun pulls no punches from the start. After an introduction just this side of one of the aforementioned Stone Roses' backward beauties, the album pumps in the morning mist with "Sven-G-Englar" -- a song of such accomplished gorgeousness that one wonders why such a tiny country as Iceland can musically outperform entire continents in just a few short minutes. The rest of this full-length follows such similar quality. Extremely deep strings underpin falsetto wails from the mournfully ...

| | Interpol Turn On The Bright Lights CD (2002)
Radiohead : 7 Television Commercials
$9.95 The stunning debut album that incorporates so many postpunk influences: Joy Division, Television, Morrissey, . Includes the bonus track "Specialist".
Interpol: Carlos D., Daniel Kessler, Paul Banks, Samuel Fogarino. Audio Mixers: Gareth Jones ; Peter Katis. Recording information: Tarquin Studios. Photographers: Andrew Zaeh; Sean McCabe. Unknown Contributor Roles: Daniel Kessler; Paul Banks; Sam Fogarino. One might go into a review like this one wondering how many words will pass before Joy Division is brought up. In this case, the answer is 16. Many are too quick to classify Interpol as mimics and lose out on discovering that little more than an allusion is being made. The music made by both bands explores the vast space between black and white and produces something pained, deftly penetrating, and beautiful. Save for a couple vocal tics, that's where the obvious parallels end. The other fleeting comparisons one can one whip up when talking about Interpol are several -- roughly ...
| | NOFX Greatest Hits Ever Written (By Us) CD (2004)
Radiohead : 7 Television Commercials
$10.79 Recording information: Motor Studios; West Beach Recorders. Photographers: Brian K. Wynacht; John Carder Bush ; Lisa Johnson; Adam Deluca; Brian Archer. Twenty years is a long time for any band, let alone one that plays jocular warp-speed anthems with titles like "Party Enema" and "Green Corn." Nevertheless, here it is, NOFX's typically self-deprecating Greatest Songs Ever Written: By Us. ...

| | Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man DVD (2006) Widescreen; Subtitled
Radiohead : 7 Television Commercials
$9.99 Leonard Cohen manages to garner fans from the unlikeliest of places despite his distinctly un-rock-&-roll appearance and a set of songs that veer closer to poetry than to their uneasy bedfellows in the pantheon of popular music. But viewers looking for an in-depth analysis of the man behind some of the most deeply introspective music ever recorded should look elsewhere: LEONARD COHEN: I'M YOUR MAN contains precious little insight from Cohen himself. Instead, director Lian Lunson has pieced together a warm tribute to the Canadian singer, drawing on the words of his many celebrity fans while also sharing generous amounts of footage from a Cohen tribute concert staged in 2005. The concert was filmed in Australia, with the bulk of the celebrity testimonials coming from performers at the show. The eclectic array of artists taking part include Nick Cave, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Martha and Rufus Wainwright, and folk legend Linda Thompson, all of whom perform unique interpretations ...
