Scott Hamilton is in top form during this live date recorded at London's Pizza Express Jazz Club. Hamilton is always a masterful improviser who logically builds upon the foundation of each piece. Accompanied by a swinging English rhythm section consisting of pianist John Pearce, bassist Dave Green, and drummer Steve Brown, the veteran tenor saxophonist offers a diverse set, beginning with Tadd Dameron's snappy "The Squirrel." He easily switches gears for lush treatments of "When Your Lover Has Gone" and "When I Fall in Love." Irving Berlin's "Easter Parade" is hardly common fare for jazz musicians, but Hamilton recognizes timeless melodies and offers a swinging rendition. The one unfamiliar piece is "Licks," a composition by Green which salutes the recordings that Lucky Thompson made with Oscar Pettiford during the 1950s. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

Live In London album
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) ...

| | Harry "Sweets" Edison Sweets CD (1956) Reissue; Remastered; Digipak
Live In London songs
$9.55 Neither an innovator nor an iconoclast, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison is simply one of the bluesiest, hardest-swinging, and downright tastiest jazz musicians of the 20th century. A consummate sideman who worked steadily throughout his career (even getting gigs recording soundtracks in the '50s), Edison created music that always reflected his journeyman aesthetic ...
| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Live In London album
$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and ...

| | Ronan Keating 10 Years Of Hits CD (2004) (Import) Germany; Argentina
Live In London CD music
$19.69 10 Years of Hits boasts quite a title; at the time of its release, Ronan Keating had only been a solo artist for four years, and not one of his hits from the six previous years as lead singer for Boyzone is featured in its original form. The three Boyzone hits, re-recorded for this collection, were all previous hits for other artists -- "Baby Can I Hold You" by Tracy Chapman, "Words" by the Bee Gees, and "Father & Son" by Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens). If it is a misleading title, it is also a forgivable one, because 13 U.K. Top Ten hits are included in the collection, as well as duets with Yusuf Islam, LeAnn Rimes, and Lulu, and Bryan Adams's "The Way You Make Me Feel," on which he sings background vocals. It is a comprehensive collection of Keating's ...
