Howard Alden and Bucky Pizzarelli played together a number of times over the years during jazz parties and in concerts, though the two seven-string guitarists never made a full CD together until In a Mellow Tone (though Alden appeared on a few tracks of Pizzarelli's A Portrait). Both heirs to the legacy of guitarist George Van Eps (who popularized the instrument), these two masters make magic on any session in which either of them takes place; combining the two meant that there was no reason for any additional players. With the extra string providing each man the ability to play a bassline for the other, they have a ball in the studio as they trade off playing gems like their cooking renditions of "In a Mellow Tone," "Cherokee," and "Three Little Words." Their slightly brisker treatment of Claude Thornhill's theme song "Snow Fall" works beautifully, while their intimate approach to "What's New" is among the best versions available on record or CD. They also capture the playful spirit of "Jitterbug Waltz" with a brilliant arrangement. Alden tackles both the haunting "In the Dark" and a brief take of "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" as solos. The sale of this highly recommended CD benefits the Sante Fe Jazz Foundation, which assisted Alden when illness limited his ability to tour for an extended period. ~ Ken Dryden

In A Mellow Tone album
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal exploration, begins melodically, yet pushes further into free-jazz territory as the tune progresses. The angular bop of the title track is offset by adventurous soloing and unique instrumentation (flute and tuba add ...

| | Diana Krall Christmas Songs CD (2005)
In A Mellow Tone music CDs
$10.49 On 2005's CHRISTMAS SONGS, Diana Krall applies her sultry vocals and nuanced piano lines to a strong set of holiday classics. In addition to turning in a stirring performance of "The Christmas Song" that would make Nat "King" Cole proud, Krall eases into a swaying version of "Winter Wonderland" and a lush rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." With its dynamic arrangements and pitch-perfect mix of pop and jazz, this album ...

| | Dizzy Gillespie Showtime At The Spotlite 52ND Street New York City, June 1946 CDs (2008)
In A Mellow Tone CD music
$19.59 Dizzy Gillespie is heard leading his big band in a series of live performances during the summer of 1946, recorded by the legendary Jerry Newman, a fan who made historic transcription discs of many groups during the era. Unlike many of the commercial issues that have appeared over the years, Uptown was able to obtain the original discs from Newman's family, so with skilled restoration, the audio is quite impressive throughout this two-CD set. The fidelity is especially great for the horns and reeds, while the rhythm section isn't completely buried as on many such sessions. Some of the highlights include a sizzling take of "Our Delight" featuring the leader and tenorist James Moody, vibraphonist Milt Jackson in "The Man I Love," Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" with its composer at the piano and Jackson, several takes of Gillespie's modern "Things to Come," plus a guest appearance ...
| | Caetano Veloso Tropicalia 2 CD (1994)
In A Mellow Tone music CDs
$14.79 TROPICALIA 2 demonstrates both that Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil bring out the best in each other, and that popular music--at least in Brazil--can be highly politicized and still beautiful and entertaining. The English translations of Gil and Veloso's lyrics provide excellent insight into their political views, albeit tempered with a slightly surrealistic hue.
The music on TROPICALIA 2 features sparser arrangements than that of later Gil albums such as QUANTA. On "Dada," Veloso and Gil sing together accompanied only by cello, acoustic guitars, bass and percussion; the result is haunting and gorgeous. "Cada Macao no seu Galho (Cho Chup)" is a lively and playful romp incorporating an abundance of Brazilian percussion. While TROPICALIA 2 doesn't incorporate many of the fuzzed-out acid-rock touches of Gil and Veloso's work from the late '60s, it does show that these two giants of Brazilian music are still as inventive, vibrant, and radical as they ever were.
Recorded at Nas Nuevas and Polygram, Rio De Janiero, Brazil, and WR, Salvador, from March to May, 1993. Includes liner notes by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Arto Lindsay.

| | Donald Harrison Power Of Cool CDs (1993) Import
In A Mellow Tone album
$18.85 Donald Harrison has had several musical identities in his career. Best known as a post-bop altoist who played early on with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, a quintet that he co-led with Terence Blanchard, and his own jazz groups, Harrison has also been interested in hip-hop, smooth jazz, rap, and funk. His sound on alto has always been original and he has an open-minded approach to music. However, although The Power of Cool has been called "a smooth classic," in reality this CTI extravaganza has Harrison mostly cast as a bit player despite the fact that he is supposedly the leader. Recorded during producer Creed Taylor's comeback years when he attempted to bring the revived CTI label back to the former glories it had reached in the ...

$11.05 With FOR YOUR PLEASURE, the second Roxy Music album, the band began to explore a little more of the "dark side" of the glamorous world that had become their lyrical and musical playground.
