Mac Wiseman began his career singing mountain bluegrass, where his easy-sounding tenor took the edge off the keening vocal tendencies of the genre and eventually led to his huge hit "The Ballad of Davey Crockett" in the late '50s. Wiseman increasingly turned to pop country material after that, returning to his natural bluegrass roots in the mid-'70s, bringing his amazingly accessible voice back into the fold. Nothing on this collection is innovative or edgy -- that isn't Wiseman's forte -- but it is good, solid, comfortable bluegrass, particularly his super-charged version of the traditional fiddle tune "Footprints in the Snow." Not that Wiseman doesn't remember his way around a good pop tune, though, as the two-step "The Scene of a Crime" makes clear. ~ Steve Leggett

Singles songs
$21.35 Rhino's 1997 reissue of HOW THE WEST WAS WON includes the full score along with outtakes and alternate versions.
This double CD has generally superior sound to the 1992 Sony Music release, but its more than two-hours of music may be a classic case of overkill. The essential problem is that How the West Was Won is rooted in two separate bodies of music, the Alfred Newman instrumental and orchestral material (including the rousing main title theme), spiced with a few traditional (i.e. folk) and traditional-style tunes; and the songs sung by Debbie Reynolds in her various set pieces as an entertainer, principally "Home in the Meadow" (adapted from "Greensleeves"). The Alfred Newman material ...

Singles music CDs
$11.49 I Wish We All Could Win is the debut of the Afters, a Texas quartet whose slick alternative pop settles nicely between Switchfoot and Fountains of Wayne. They avoid the latter band's sardonic wit -- after all, Win is a joint release between Epic and Christian imprint INO. Instead, the Afters concentrate on bright and hopeful, but also pretty trite sentiment like "On this beautiful night/We'll make everything right/My beautiful love," and "Love Will You Make You Beautiful." Of course, they also tinge their pop hooks with wrangling guitars and the occasional whine of feedback ("Someday"; ...
