Duran Duran: Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor. Duran Duran's eponymous debut artfully coalesced the sonic and stylistic elements of the burgeoning new romantic movement they were soon to spearhead: pumping synths, glossy production, and seemingly impossible haircuts. Ultra-smart singles like "Girls on Film" and "Planet Earth" became instant smash hits both in the U.K. and America, and other fine pop gems such as "Anyone Out There" and "Careless Memories" rounded out the album's stellar first side. Side two was a far more experimental and revealing affair, with primary songwriter Nick Rhodes leading the band through atmospheric mood-pieces like "Night Boat," "Sound of Thunder," and the instrumental "Tel Aviv," all of which are particularly reminiscent of mid-era Roxy Music (clearly one of Duran's biggest influences). The band's groundbreaking music videos would do the rest, securing them a unique standing as forerunners of the first MTV generation and cementing their status as one of the decade's most successful pop music icons. [The band's first U.K. number one, the non-album single "Is There Something I Should Know?" was also later added to the CD version of Duran Duran.] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Along with Spandau Ballet, Visage, and others, Duran Duran led the early-'80s charge of the New Romantics, a movement heavily inspired by the fashion-conscious, synth-colored art-school antics of Bowie and Roxy Music. Duran Duran and their peers updated that sound for a new decade, adopting punk's DIY attitude and helping to give birth to dance-rock along the way by adding a disco-ish beat. Subsequent releases would find the band moving more toward straight pop, becoming simultaneously less dance-oriented and less arty. The 1981 debut, however, is full of thumping, club-friendly beats and long, atmospheric tunes full of extended synthesizer-centered interludes. The fact that the boys were pop-savvy enough to add irresistible choruses to "Girls on Film," "Careless Memories," and "Planet Earth" doesn't hurt matters.Rolling Stone (9/4/03, p.146) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Simultaneously atmospheric and dance-floor-directed...a synth-rock blueprint..." Q (10/03, p.127) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Naturally, it's all terribly glamorous..." | Duran Duran (1st LP) Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Not the first album I have posted this before, but any REAL duran-fan knows that this is not the first album. This version was released after RIO. The original "first album" contained the song "To The Shore". A rerelease dropped "To The Shore" and added the 12" for "Planet Earth". Five stars on the album, but no stars to CD Universe for not correcting this problem and it's false advertising of this as the first album. Tonight an album saved my life...... I always remember the very first moment I heard this album. I was standing in a kitchen, in a house somewhere in Sligo. My sisters boyfriend had placed his headphones to his very modern walkman,on my ears and pressed play. The first thing I heard was the enveloping notes of "The Sound Of Thunder". I was dumbstruck by it's spirit, which seemed to reach deep inside me. From that moment on I was obsessed which the ownership of this album. I was eleven years old. We were migrating to Australia two days after this epiphany and I was to receive a walkman and an album, in exchange for being renched away from all I knew. No guesses on the cassette I bought!! So for me this album is more than just a bunch of well written pop songs. This album is a place to be safe and an escape from reality, where each track lets you drift inside it's core and become part of something special. Everyday for the first six months of moving to Australia I listened to this album each spare moment on my walkman to help me through the day. For mine this is still their best album musically, followed closely by "Seven and The Ragged Tiger". There is a splash of Blonde here and a dash of Roxy there, but all in all this is a spectacular debut. If you like Electronic music you MUST have this album, even if you never purchase the bands other back catalogue. This was Duran at their must quirky and edgy, just listen to "Friends Of Mine" and you'll agree. Submitted by Disjecta71 (Brisbane, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Perfect Debut This album truly defines a very unique and very talented band. In each song of Duran Duran's first LP, you'll find many songs have this unique sound, feel, atmosphere. Duran Duran captures this very abstract yet very surreal type reality with their songs. And I truly mean that, their songs really are beautiful on this album. Some of them are dark like Planet Earth and Nightboat. A couple others carry a very cool and otherworldly sound like Sound of Thunder. Despite the rumors that synth is not very good because it's not natural, you can do really great things with synth. It's never overused and it's prominent where most appropriate. But the point is all the other instruments have a very important part or voice if you will in every song. In my opinion, the album sounds amazing from the first track to the end of Tel Aviv, another great song which through it's sounds and music conveys the beauty and danger of this city. Duran Duran's first album is a must-have for anyone who is even the most casual fan. Submitted by rhodeswatson (Dymaxian) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
