Long confined to the bins of specialist record-shops, film soundtracks are in the process of becoming a popular genre all of their own. If the genius of such composers as Ennio Morricone, John Barry or Nino Rota no longer needs demonstrating, it took hundreds of 'trip hop' recordings, & a few masterpieces like the first Portishead album, before original works took precedence over samples. Less well-known than their international colleagues, Michel Magne, Antoine Duhamel, & Francois de Roubaix were geniuses at least their equals in their genres, & their discography is a sampling-reservoir to which producers from all over the world come to slake their thirsts. Features songs from, Francois de Roubaix, Ennio Morricone, Michel Magne, Serge Gainsbourg, Antoine Duhamel , Charles Dumont & more & mixed by, Carl Craig, Howie B, Sofa Surfers, Luke Vibert, & more. 18 tracks. Universal. 2003. Cinemix Review

Cinemix album
$9.09 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some ...

$11.29 Released in celebration of Les Paul's 90th birthday, AMERICAN MADE WORLD PLAYED pays tribute to the master guitarist and inventor who changed the face of jazz, country, blues, and rock with his recording and guitar-design innovations. While the lineup here is stellar and includes vocalists Sting, Joss Stone, and Mick Hucknall (Simply Red), and guitarists Joe Perry (Aerosmith) and Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), among others, the album is at its best when it allows ...

| | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009)
Cinemix CD music
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow ...

| | Presenting Dionne Warwick CD (1963)
Cinemix music CDs
$10.45 Dionne Warwick's first album in a partnership with the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David that was to last the rest of the decade, 1963's PRESENTING, contains early favorites such as "Make It Easy on Yourself," "Wishin' and Hopin'," and "Don't Make Me Over." Singer and songwriters' winning combination of sophisticated arrangements, subtle orchestration, and Warwick's ingenious phrasing and muted tone is much in evidence, and the album also contains such high-quality period pop fare as "This Empty Place" and "I Smiled Yesterday."
The aptly titled Presenting Dionne Warwick (1963) was the vocalist's first long-player and quickly established the artist as a suitable vehicle for interpreting the quirky pop melodies of Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics). She met the pair during the summer of 1961 as a background singer during the recording session for the Drifters' minor hit "Mexican Divorce," which had been penned by the lucrative pair. Their initial outing, "Don't Make Me Over," became the first of the alliances between Warwick and the songwriting team to hit the pop chart. The prolific nature of this collaboration resulted in Bacharach and David providing three-quarters of the tunes on this dozen-track album. Interestingly, ...
