Avenged Sevenfold: M. Shadows (vocals); Zacky Vengenance, Synyster Gates (guitar); Johnny Christ (bass); The Roll (drums). Personnel: Synyster Gates (guitar, piano); Zacky Vengeance (guitar); The Reverend (drums). Audio Mixers: Mudrock ; Andrew Murdock. Recording information: Third Stone And Mates. Photographer: Lisa Johnson . Where Avenged Sevenfold's debut, SOUNDING THE SEVENTH TRUMPET, announced their unique metalcore sound, their follow-up, WAKING THE FALLEN, perfects it. The band manages to sound both more melodically accessible-drawing on classic metal and dark, Alice in Chains-like harmonies-and more punishing-wielding a death metal-influenced crunch. The writing and performances are stepped up, too, yielding an album that consistently matches its sonic architecture with memorable vocal melodies and dizzying guitar leads. The title track opener invites the listener in with its ominously atmospheric feel, setting the stage for the pummeling to come on tracks like "Unholy Confessions" and "Reminissions." Frontman M. Shadows alternates between throat-shredding screams and hook-laden melody lines with ease, while the band's dual lead guitar attack offers up no shortage of grinding riffs and solos spilling over with superhuman technique. Add to these a rhythm section capable of splitting skulls, and one is left with an album of undeniable power. Mudrock's dry production focuses almost all of Waking the Fallen on Avenged Sevenfold's greatest strength. That, of course, would be performance, and the band delivers with unflagging aggression and precision. Never mind the lyrical ennui or throat-scrape yowling; there's more to this music than generic cliché. When he wants to, M. Shadows can passionately project in a way that turns even the grim "Desecrate Through Reverance" into an almost bouncy little melody. (Incidentally, Reverance? Remenissions? Reverand? Maybe doomsday is around the corner, but isn't there still time to run song titles and soubriquets through a spell check?) And whether attacking a riff in unison or in harmonized parts, the double-threat guitars of Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance do their duty like search-and-destroy commandos -- in and out fast, leaving devastation in their wake. Especially noteworthy -- and note-heavy -- is the guitar solo that blazes through the last moments of "Second Heartbeat" and the head-spinning single-stroke virtuosity of the Reverand throughout the album. ~ Robert L. Possessing metal pipes like few before him, leonine Steelheart yelper Michael Matijevic scarred the airwaves forever when he hammered the simply unmatchable chorus of the hairball "I'll Never Let You Go": ludicrous and sublime, akin to Whitney Houston hitting the hot spot in "I Will Always ...

Avenged Sevenfold: M. Shadows (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards); Zacky Vengeance, Synyster Gates (guitar); Dameon Ash (bass); The Reverend Tholomew Plague (drums). Additional personnel: Valary Di Benedetto, Mr. Plague (sound effects). Producers: Donald Cameron, Avenged Sevenfold. Engineers: Donald Cameron, Avenged Sevenfold. Recorded at Westbeach, Hollywood, California. Avenged Sevenfold would develop and refine their metalcore sound on later releases, but 2001's SOUNDING THE SEVENTH TRUMPET, the band's debut, announced the arrival of a force to be reckoned with. The Southern California outfit's mix of straightforward melodic metal with extreme punk and death metal tendencies creates a sonic wallop that bludgeons from the opener "To End the Rapture" through ...

Waking The Fallen
$13.35 Avenged Sevenfold: Rev, M. Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance, Johnny Christ. After solidly establishing themselves on the contemporary heavy music scene, Avenged Sevenfold wasted little time with following up their 2005 break-through effort, CITY OF EVIL. The band took a bold step on their fourth and self-titled full-length, opting to produce it themselves--a risky task indeed for such a young band. Right out of the gate, Singer M. Shadows leads A7X even further into melodic territory--but not without a little help. Lending her vocal support to the slow-grooving "Gunslinger" and the heavy country rocker "Dear God" and taking a solo turn on "(Unbound) The Wild Ride" is Nashville implant Shanna Crooks. A7X explore dramatic power metal in the epic "A Little Piece Of Heaven," while first single "Critical Acclaim" cuts close for what has become the group's signature sound. Nonetheless, ...

Waking The Fallen
$17.75 Smoky Greenwell was born in Michigan on the 4th of July 1951, reared in Delaware, and schooled in Spain and Tennessee. Greenwell learned harmonica in earnest in the mid-1970's by sitting in with the venerable blues masters Furry Lewis, Piano Red and Mose Vincent. Greenwell's career as a first-call sessions player began at Sam Phillips' Sun Studios and led him to take up residence in Nashville in the '80's. Greenwell came to national attention in the band Blues Co-Op (with Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes). It was in Nashville that Greenwell began a long association with Allman Brothers keyboardist, singer and producer Johnny Neel, a partnership that continues to this day.Greenwell came to New Orleans in 1981 for an engagement at the now legendary (and defunct) Old Absinthe Bar and decided to stay. Since that time, he has shared stages with Snooks Eaglin, Marc Adams, Eddie Bo, “Big” Al Carson, Brint Anderson, Jumpin' Johnny Sansone, Coco Robicheaux, Willie Lockett, John Carey, Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes, Kermit Venable and BeauBassin, Kipori “Baby Wolf” Woods, Bryan Lee, Timothea, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, Jeremy Lyons, Spencer Bohren, George Porter, Jr., Waylon Thibodeaux, Rockin' Dopsie, Jr., Chubby Carrier, Blue Floyd, David & Roselyn, Mother Blues, Lenny McDaniel, Irene Sage, Tommy Malone, Tim Green, Jimmy Page, Eugene Carrier, Tom Worrell, and many others in the areas of blues, jazz, Cajun, Zydeco, funk, ...
