| | Mario Turning Point CD (2004)
Out Of Sight, On The Grind CD music
$7.59 Mario first earned attention in his mid-teens with his huge hit "Just a Friend," a smooth R&B updating of Biz Markie's rap classic, and followed it up with a successful self-titled debut. With the shift into adulthood for his second record, Mario faced inevitable comparisons to another newly matured R&B crooner--Usher. Far from shying away from his similarities to Usher, Mario gets them out of the way on the first track of 2004's TURNING POINT, "18," where, with the help of Cassidy, he reminds listeners that he has "seven years to catch up" to the older superstar.
While Mario opens with that tough declaration, his forte is the slow jam, and TURNING POINT is chock full of them. He follows "18" with the album's first single, the sultry "Let Me Love You," which proves to be straight out of the Marvin Gaye playbook. Mario channels the spirit of Teddy Pendergrass on the remorseful "Couldn't Say No," and recalls Jodeci ...
| | Pras Win, Lose Or Draw CD (2005)
Out Of Sight, On The Grind music CDs
$16.29 After the huge success of the Fugees' THE SCORE, Pras Michel was easily the quietest member of the group; outside of the ubiquitous 1998 hit "Ghetto Supastar" from the movie BULWORTH, followed by a rather rushed debut of the same name, Pras was mostly musically silent. Apparently he was gathering his energies, because he returned with a flourish on 2005's enjoyable and thoughtful WIN LOSE OR DRAW.
On "Light My Fire," the former Fugee rather modestly states, "still Pras/fat hooks/I'm no Nas." While Queensbridge's aforementioned king is a high standard to live up to, Pras is capable of imparting insight in his own subtle manner, while peeling off some head-turning lines on the contemplative "For Love" and the self-deprecating "Mistakes." Furthermore, his hooks are unique. On "Haven't Found," for example, he reworks a classic U2 riff, adding his own absorbing adornments and dropping a neat political oration over the resultant beat with style to spare. After his conspicuous silence, Pras Michel had a good deal to say on WIN LOSE OR DRAW, making it a hearty, absorbing ...
| | Bruce Arnold Two Guys From South Dakota CD (2005)
Out Of Sight, On The Grind songs
$16.45 While growing up in South Dakota in the 1960s, Bruce Arnold was inspired by the playing of some of the top local musicians, including that of Mike Miller. Arnold, who loves playing guitar duets, invited Miller over to his studio one day and this CD contains the results. Arnold and Miller dig into six standards and really stretch themselves, taking turns playing lead and consistently feeding off of each other's ideas. Whether digging into the blues on "Billie's Bounce," taking John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" at a surprisingly relaxed pace, or interacting closely on "Alone Together," Arnold and Miller make for a very complementary yet potent team, inspiring themselves to play at their best. ~ Scott Yanow
One wouldn't think that the back waters of South Dakota would be a place for artist expression. That's where I grew up in the 60's. We didn't even have FM radio. All you heard was AM radio... We didn't hear people like Jimi Hendrix, or Jeff Beck -- much less Howlin' Wolf or Washboard Sam. But going against the grain were musicians like Mike Miller, Dave Wood, Mark Craney and a host of others whose artistic and musicianship level was equal to anyone in the world. I was incredibly lucky to be around these musicians during my formative years, and to hear them play. Of course I had no idea they were as great as they were. I figured "that's the level of a professional musician and that is the level I need to aspire to." Years later I realized just how fortunate I was to be around these great musicians who not only played well but had their hearts and minds in the right place and so transmitted to me the values I live by. This held true during my years at Berklee College of Music when I played duets with anyone that would have me; once again being lucky I was in Boston at the peak "guitar" period having such great musicians as Bruce Bartlett, Wayne Krantz and Mick Goodrick to ...
