4 stars More of the good stuff
An excellent follow-up, Piet and company deliver again. More of the same Unification-style songwriting, but this time Piet's vocals are meaner and more focused. If you liked "Unification" (and who didn't?) than you will like this as well. Power metal the way it was intended.

Possessing metal pipes like few before him, leonine Steelheart yelper Michael Matijevic scarred the airwaves forever when he hammered the simply unmatchable chorus of the hairball "I'll Never Let You Go": ludicrous and sublime, akin to Whitney Houston hitting the hot spot in "I Will Always Love You." The opening strands of "Everybody Loves Eileen" bring Ratt out of the cellar before the cut curls into a pop n' fresh roller coaster ride. The remainders on this ridiculous dish are also overlong examples of excess but not as memorable, paying homage to Whitesnake and other flailing stylistic ventures. Loudness was a Japanese hard rock quartet that had numerous hit albums in the 80's and early 90's. Thunder In The East reached number 74 on the Billboard charts in 1985. Wounded Bird. 2003. With 1985's Thunder in the East, Loudness were faced with the daunting challenge of conquering heavy metal fans outside their homeland of Japan for the first time. Knowing that their early sound might prove a tad too heavy and complex for American audiences, the foursome rose to the occasion by dispensing their most melodic compositions ever. Yet, except for a few obvious examples, like "We Could Be Together," first single "Crazy Nights," and the power ballad "Never Change Your Mind," the band doesn't seem at all self-conscious about this transition. The Powers That Be contains 14 fast, angst-filled hardcore punk tunes clocking in at around 30 minutes. Much of the material here is in the vein of A.F.I., Gorilla Biscuits, and Death by Stereo. That last one isn't hard to understand, as the album was produced by Paul Miner, who has worked with Death by Stereo in the past. The vocals work well with the energy of the album, and songs such as "Struggle" really show some strength.
