When he recorded this album, his lone date as a leader, trumpeter Tommy Turrentine (who was a member of Max Roach's group along with his brother, the soon-to-be famous tenor Stanley Turrentine) seemed to have a potentially great future. Unfortunately, ill health would eventually force his retirement. Turrentine's set for Time (which has been reissued on CD by Bainbridge) actually features the musicians of Roach's quintet (including brother Stanley, trombonist Julian Priester, bassist Bob Boswell, and Roach himself) plus pianist Horace Parlan. The trumpeter contributed five of the seven songs (which are joined by Horace Parlan's "Blues for J.P." and Bud Powell's "Webb City") on this fine straight-ahead hard bop set. All of the musicians play up to par and the results are swinging and fit securely into the modern mainstream of the time. ~ Scott Yanow

In the 1960s, trumpeter Miles Davis became a star outside of the jazz world, first with what history refers to as "the Quintet" with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, then with his highly influential post-BITCHES BREW electric bands. But there was a "transitional" period, after John Coltrane left Davis's employ and before the Shorter/Hancock era, which the SEVEN STEPS box set based around the SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN album documents in its entirety, ...
| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Tommy Turrentine album
$16.65 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf life ...

Tommy Turrentine CD music

| | VH1: The Big 80'S CD (1996)
Tommy Turrentine music CDs
$9.29 Halfway through the '90s, the programmers of VH1 realized there was a whole audience that hungered for the great videos of the '80s -- not only new wave refugees, but a generation of younger fans to whom the sounds of the early '80s were as classic as the British Invasion. So VH1 invented The Big '80s, a show that specialized in '80s videos. Once that was a huge success, it made perfect sense that the network would decide to release a companion album, which is exactly what Rhino's VH1: The Big '80s is. Given that the show spans from the early '80s Tommy Tutone to Don Henley's The End of the Innocence ...

| | Haale No Ceiling CD (2008)
Tommy Turrentine album
$13.59 "One of the most memorable albums of the young year.. a deeply sensual release, powered by the groove and Haale's smoky, honey-thick voice." CITYPAGES"Haale is on the verge of redefining the music scene, and is sure to unite the old generation with the new. Songs to check out: "Middle of Fire," "Off Duty Fortune Teller" and "Ay Dar Shekasteh." CHICAGO FLAME"An extraordinarily powerful vocalist. The emotions expressed in Haale's songs are as warm and inviting as the sounds.." Jim DeRogatis, CHICAGO SUN TIMES"this CD is a feast for the ears and the mind [It} is a reminder of what the music in the 1960s was ..an experiment in our musical capabilities, pushing the limits, stretching the boundaries, finding a sound that shouldn't work, but does, wondrously No Ceiling is all of these things and more." BLOGCRITICS MAGAZINE"In every song she creates, Haale makes it difficult to discern where tradition ends and modernity begins -- the indelible mark of truly progressive artistry." GLOBAL RHYTHM"No Ceiling is - and I'm going to capitalize this because it bears emphasizing - A BIG FUCKING ALBUM. The sonics are far more Western than might be expected, though the Persian elements fade skillfully into the songs, giving additional depth to the already deep. The total is greatness, heedless of origin, a silk-sharp explosion, beautiful and monstrous. This is easily in the running for my album of the year. SECOND SUPPER"Equally erotic and enlightening." BUFFALO RISING"If I had to describe the overall tone of "No Ceiling" it would be like making love in a ring of fire while awaiting death at the hands of marauding enemy soldiers. It's equal parts chaos and beauty, a pearl snatched from the mouth of a violent sea." Vail Daily"Haale's vocals easily make No Ceiling stand out..and make repeat listens an effortless task. Her ability to mix English with some Persian throughout the album builds a gorgeous border of sound, strings and guitar, which gives Haale that niche sound that can easily build a fan base with this solid and complete debut." THE FIRE NOTE"No Ceiling by Haale is a splendid journey through blended cultures and influences.. hypnotic and enchanting..This album is definitely an early favorite of 2008." PLAYBACK: STLHaale (as in halle-lujah), is a downtown New Yorker of Iranian descent whose name means ‘the halo around the moon.’ She released two mesmerizing EPs in January 2007 — ‘Morning’ and ‘Paratrooper’ — and spent the year touring across the country and in Europe. She performed at David Byrne'sNonesuch-sponsored series at Carnegie Hall, recorded with Sean Lennon (on ‘Before the Skies’), and shared the stage with such diverse artists as the legendary Hugh Masakela and Odetta. In 2007, she dazzled audiences at SXSW, the Bonnaroo Festival, ...
