TIME SQUARED was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
While TIME SQUARED maintains the Yellowjackets' reputation for laid-back contemporary jazz, the musicianship is consistently strong. Tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer now and then recalls standard bop vocabularies with tasteful phrasing and timbre, while bassist Jimmy Haslip's tightly constructed bass lines surge alongside drummer Marcus Baylor's hi-hat-heavy timekeeping.
"Gabriela Rose" and "Claire" show the ensemble's penchant for romantic lyricism. Pianist Russell Ferrante is especially noteworthy on these tracks, as he is on the Thelonious Monk tribute "Monk's Habit," in which he delivers rich solos peppered with angular, idiosyncratic lines in the manner of the great bebop pioneer. The album closes with the impressionistic "My 1st Best Friend," featuring lovely excursions by Mintzer, proving The Yellowjackets capable of branching out into exploratory styles while still maintaining their fan base
Yellowjackets: Bob Mintzer (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, synthesizer); Russell Ferrante (piano, keyboards); Jimmy Haslip (electric bass); Marcus Baylor (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Jean Baylor (vocals).

Yellowjackets Time Squared Songs Time Squared Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A VERY GOOD ALBUM This is an excellent album. The songs are varied and orginal. There are energized fusion songs like 'Time Sqaured,' and smooth ballads like 'Healing Waters.' There is a perfect mix of progressive ideas and more familiar jazziness. Throughout, there is depth, thought, and energy. There is quite a bit of electronic sounds. Bob Mintzers ewi may disappoint some ears eager for raw accoustic sound. On the other hand, many people love it, those who don't can learn to. There is tons of powerful saxophone anyway. I'm someone who resists electronic kinds of sounds, but I enjoy the ewi and some of the keyboard sounds used in the album. It's all good. Pick any of the four musicians, and you'll be amazed by their quality and skill. Not only are they all fantastic and impressive musicians, but they work so well together. The one critisism I can give is that sometimes the songs drag on and kind of lose your attention. Some music just graps you and will not let you go. This album isn't afraid to just keep walking. But I don't want to give the impression that it's boring. It isn't. For great grooves, feeling, skill, diversity, awesome compositions, and overall VERY GOOD MUSIC, consider 'Time Squared.' The original Fillmore East album is one of the finest live documents of the rock era, capturing the original line-up of one of the '70s' tightest outfits before they were cruelly robbed of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Taken from five 1971 performances at New York's fabled Fillmore East, the extended and effortlessly melodic workouts of "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" and ...

$15.89 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
The most adventurous quartet in contemporary jazz has met its visual match in Peter Max, the legendary pop artist who, as it turns out, is a huge fan of the band. Russell Ferrante and company could probably feel at home naming any of their innovative, loose-spirited albums after one of Max's paintings, but Altered State definitely fits the vibe here -- which is all odd meters, emotionally provocative melodic lines, and unexpected harmonies. Max, in turn, took a few preliminary tracks and was inspired to create the cool, splotchy cover ...

| | Grupo Afro Boricua Bombaso CD (1998)
Time Squared music CDs
$12.49 William Cepeda directs this ensemble of singers and percussionists. Though he himself is known for playing trombone and conch shells, that part of his instrumental self is barely utilized. Instead he, Antonio Martinez, Nellie Lebron, Roberto Cepeda, Hector Matos and Hector Calderon sing while Calderon, Luis Cepeda, and Angel Mojica play up a storm on Puerto Rican percussion instruments like the bomba drum, maraca, guiro, and pandereta. There's also a large compliment of additional singers, percussionists, and dancers who also sing, making for a huge sound. At the center of this folkloric Puerto Rican music are the bomba and plena rhythms, and the chanting of unison voices that have many stories to tell, and rituals to demonstrate. There's the depitcion of a cockfight, with roosters crowing and bettors arguing for "Meliton Tombe," a black slave's story, forceful and angry in enunciation during "Majestad Negra," the singers quoting "Peanut Vendor," and the gleeful grand arrival of the people in Puerto Rico for "Afro Boricua." Too bad you cannot also see the dancers, black men dressed in white suits as a protest on the ultra hot "El Conde De Loiza," or women displaying their colorful skirts during "Seshuque y Balance." Two themes ...
