(4 Customer Reviews)
Though Bela Fleck's liner notes make it sound like nearly anyone who walked in the studio door was asked to sit in, no musical slouch could keep up with this band of chopsters. The aesthetic soup that Fleck and friends cook up (Bill Monroe meets Weather Report at a world music convention, and that's just the tip of the iceberg) is nothing if not eclectic. And yet, because of the strong compositional sense and the leader's distinctive and breathtaking picking throughout, there is cohesiveness to the proceedings.
A large part of the enjoyment of listening to LITTLE WORLDS is the audible quality of fun and daring among the participants--these guys like not only to push the envelope, but to push each other toward new musical insights. This may not be the first album to have theremin, didjeridoo, uillean pipes, cello, and banjo all on one track, but the smart money is on that track to be the most musically viable one of its kind. With remarkably little filler, this generous three-disc offering by the already-prolific Fleck will take the willing listener through many little and exotic worlds indeed.

Bela Fleck Little Worlds Songs Little Worlds Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Fascinating Musical Experience Little Worlds is certainly an apt title for this fascinating musical journey. The music is hypnotic, it pulls you in. So many different genres by musicians who are obviously masters of their individual instruments. This was my first exposure to Bela Fleck & The Flecktones. I am impressed. This disc is a GOOD buy! Submitted by DLeeWebb (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Groundbreaking musical caviar! I've been collecting jazz, and especially modern jazz for 30 years. I also love great blue grass music. I bought Flight of the Cosmic Hippo years ago and enjoyed it but Bela's latest collaboration, Little Worlds, is to say the very least 'Outta this World'. Totally awesome, new stuff like I've never heard before. Exciting to listen to yet so pleasant on the brain. Stimulating and relaxing at the same time. What great jazz is all about. If you buy no other music this century, you must buy this triple CD.

Bella, Bela Little Worlds features superb instrumental work, as expected, but also a varied range of moods and musicals styles not always evident in "fusion". By surrounding themselves with a well-chosen array of guest artists, the 'Tones smoothly pull off everything from Newgrass to relatively straight jazz improvisations. A direct descendant from the pedigree of one of the 20th century's virtuosos, Norah Jones might not be on such a lofty artistic level as her dad Ravi Shankar, but certainly inherited some musical intuition from him. With nary a sitar nor raga within earshot, the young newcomer sounds very much an assimilated, western, 21st century pop-jazz singer. One thing that separates her from the ...
| | Derek Trucks Soul Serenade CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Little Worlds CD music
$6.79 Though recorded nearly two years before the release of the Derek Trucks Band's previous album, Soul Serenade feels like a step forward from Joyful Noise in its maturity and focus. By almost any measure, this is a jazz album; the only references to rock can be heard in the overdriven tone and bluesy slide phrasing that Trucks consistently employs. The prominence of the Hammond organ, and in particular ...

Little Worlds album
$14.59 This is a Super Audio Hybrid CD playable only on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Early in his career, vibraphonist Terry Gibbs was encouraged by Lionel Hampton, who actually asked him to join his band (though Hamp's wife, Gladys, nixed the deal). Many decades later, Gibbs pays tribute to Hampton on this enjoyable set. Using a band of Los Angeles musicians including tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb, organist Joey DeFrancesco, guitarist Anthony Wilson, and pianist Mike Melvoin, Gibbs performs a variety of songs associated with Hampton, plus four basic originals that the older vibraphonist would have enjoyed jamming. Gibbs is more boppish than Hamp, but their styles ...
| | Marsalis Family: A Jazz Celebration CD (2003) With DVD; Limited Edition
Little Worlds CD music
$22.75 Recorded live at Kiefer UNO Lakefront Arena, New Orleans, Louisiana on August 4, 2001. Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal.
Barring the 1982 album Fathers and Sons and a brief and legendary pairing during the '80s, the Marsalis' have largely avoided playing together. It is almost as if despite becoming some of the most technically proficient and creative forces in music, appearing together would relegate them to a freakish gimmick or biological fluke and negate all their hard work as individuals. The truth is, though, that the public has always enjoyed and often demanded that the Marsalis clan appear together, and it is an exciting thing musically when they do. Wynton Marsalis' early recordings with his brother, such as Black Codes (From the Underground), are perhaps some of his most revelatory. Before he completely dedicated himself to single-handedly rebuilding the historical foundations of jazz, he was freed-up to investigate Ornette Coleman, late-period John Coltrane, and at least evince some classical notions into his jazz recordings. Perhaps Branford Marsalis benefited most from the eventual breakup with his brother, allowing him to find his voice exploring the realm of progressive popular music and world influences with Sting -- which led directly back to some of the most lively and relevant jazz recordings of the '80s and early '90s. However, it is legend in his own time Ellis Marsalis who started it all and whose tireless and subtle guidance inspired not only his sons, but many of their contemporaries to equally creative heights. All of this is evident in the live concert featured on The Marsalis Family: A Jazz Celebration, marking the first time that every Marsalis has performed together. Planned as a tribute to Ellis at the time of his retirement from teaching at New Orleans University in August of 2001, the live performance features the family patriarch alone at the piano as well as with his more outspoken sons. Given Wynton and Branford's idiosyncratic penchant for Ellington-influenced blues, odd time signatures, and in-your-face contrapuntal retorts, it is interesting to contrast Ellis' more laid-back approach, which brings to mind Bill Evans, Tommy Flanagan, and Dave Brubeck. Drummer Jason is a competent roil of energy, ...
