Kiss: Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Peter Criss (vocals, drums). Recorded between 1974 & 1979. Includes liner notes by Jeff Kitts. The discount-priced 20th Century Masters compilation presents the highlights of the first half-decade of Kiss' existence, drawing from recordings originally released between 1974 and 1979. For that period, compilation producer Bill Levenson begins by picking four LP tracks from the band's initially unsuccessful first three albums: "Strutter" and "Deuce" from Kiss, the title track from Hotter Than Hell, and "C'mon and Love Me" from Dressed to Kill. The remaining eight tracks represent Kiss' highest charting singles of the next several years, among them the breakthrough live version of "Rock and Roll All Nite," the Top Ten ballad "Beth," and their second gold-selling single, "I Was Made for Lovin' You." For such a brief and focused compilation, the only significant omission to note is "Shout It Out Loud," which charted in both studio and live version, the former getting to number 31 on the Hot 100. Of course, a more career-spanning collection would have included the 1990 Top Ten hit "Forever," but that's saved for a second volume. ~ William Ruhlmann This anthology's focus is on Kiss's rich, '70s period, serving as an excellent sampler for neophytes curious to find out how Kiss has managed to invoke such slavish devotion from their fans. If one is willing to look past the make-up and hoopla, the success of these New York City natives is founded on what is essentially basic rock & roll packed with hooks, straightforward subject matter (i.e. sex), and killer guitar solos provided by one Ace Frehley. Among the band's classic numbers included here are songs about streetwalkers ("Strutter") and teen ingenues ("Christine Sixteen"), and plenty of cuts loaded with the aforementioned sexual innuendo ("Love Gun," "Calling Dr. Love"). There are stabs at country-flavored melancholy, ("Hard Luck Woman," which was later covered by Garth Brooks), disco opportunism ("I Was Made for Lovin' You"), and the seed of the power-ballad movement that erupted in the '80s ("Beth.") Last but not least is "Rock and Roll All Nite," a quintessential rock and roll anthem in its own right. 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Kiss Music 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Kiss Songs 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Kiss Music 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Kiss Music Review Average Rating: (3.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Better that Vol. 2! Don't buy this CD It doesn't take someone with half a brain to figure out that their arguably second biggest hit is missing "shout it out loud". Jeez. This is the recording company trying to take your money so when another compilation comes out a few years later with the track you will buy their product a second time. A dissapointing collection...only by comparison This album gives you the bare essential Kiss classics. However, every one of those tracks are on the album "The Very Best of Kiss". And on that album there are 21 songs, not 12.
I, who already owned The Very Best of Kiss, was dissapointed with this album. The songs are great, but if you cough up a little more for The Very Best then you get a whole lot more for you to listen to on those long car rides. This is just a Kiss sampler. KISS hit classics from 1974 to 1979! This twentieth century masters millennium collection the best of KISS CD is not bad it's good. Except the CD could have added more KISS classics from the rest of the seventies. I like the live version song of Rock And Roll All Nite on here
as a hit classic. I would mind hearing the studio version instead of the live recording one myself. Submitted by CDJay (Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Kiss
$10.15 System of a Down: Daron Malakian (vocals, guitar); Serj Tankian (vocals, keyboards); Shavo Odadjian (bass guitar); John Dolmayan (drums). Adjectives like "ambitious," "jagged," and "startling" have always defined System of a Down, and their third official full-length is no different. Prerelease, the band described Mezmerize as being the first part -- the first side -- of what's essentially a double album. The records' packaging would even slot together, making the eventual Mezmerize/Hypnotize whole. Appropriately then, there's an intro to System's first new material since 2001's brilliant Toxicity. On "Soldier Side" Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian harmonize as they do throughout the record, and Malakian's guitar has a mournful, Eastern air. But it's just a lull before "B.Y.O.B.," a thrash assault pierced with rabid and incredulous screams. "Why do they always send the poor?" Suddenly the gears switch, and the song stomps in crunchy half-time as its lyrics riff with a sick grin on cultural ignorance. The government's lying, System's saying, but "Blast off!/It's party time." The vocal exploration ...
