A reporter discovers a mysterious key that unlocks the secrets of a legendary actress who vanished from view at the height of her career. The creative love child of anime director Satoshi Kon and screenwriter Sadayuki Mura (PERFECT BLUE), MILLENNIUM ACTRESS recounts the legend of an actress named Chiyoko Fujiwara who mysteriously disappeared during her greatest moment of fame. Via a sweeping backdrop of historical and fictional events that breathlessly span time, Chiyoko relates her saga to a documentary filmmaker named Genya who has tracked the actress down to her remote hideaway. As the story unfolds, Chiyoko's personal history becomes inextricably intertwined with the characters she plays in the movies throughout her long career, all in pursuit of her first love, a political activist painter who left her only with a mysterious key that sets the whole story in motion. Along the way Chiyoko's quest is hampered by an older actress and a mysterious scarfaced man. Luckily, Genya and his sardonic cameraman find themselves swept up in the story also, and come to her rescue several times. It all may sound a little odd, and western audiences not used to anime's occasionally static style may take a few minutes to adjust, but once they do, countless rewards await: brilliant animation, a treasure trove of insight into Japan's history and film industry, and for anyone who's ever loved and lost, an almost assured shedding of many heartfelt tears. Theatrical Release: September 12, 2003 (NY/LA) Millennium Actress Reviews: "...[A] sweeping, beautifully drawn melange of fantasy and history....To watch MILLENNIUM ACTRESS is to witness one cinematic medium celebrating another, an expression of movie love that is wonderfully eccentric and deeply affecting..."
-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "...The film's matter-of-fact, realistic animation style makes a fitting contrast to the topsy-turvy nature of its narration....MILLENNIUM ACTRESS fascinatingly goes where films have not often gone before..."
-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "What starts as a celebrity mystery scoop later morphs into a melodrama of epic longing."-- Bill Stamets, Chicago Sun-Times Millennium Actress | List Price | $12.98 (You save $4.29) | | Studio | Paramount Home Entertainment | | Orig Year | 2003 | | DVD Encoding | Region 1 | | All Time Sales Rank | 9152 | | CD Universe Part number | 6128031 | | Catalog number | 90393 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Oct 28, 2003 | | Rating | PG (MPAA) | | Running Time | 87 Minutes | | Additional Info | Widescreen; Subtitled | | Movie Details | Color; Widescreen; Subtitled |

$12.85 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue.
