With Till Then, Danilo Perez pays tribute to popular composers he feels have made a difference in the world. Though the Panamanian pianist offers a few original compositions, the work of other composers -- well-known, consequential people -- is the main focus of this Tommy LiPuma-produced CD. Some of the more myopic people in the jazz world will automatically assume that if Perez is using jazz to salute popular composers, he must be thinking of Tin Pan Alley. But in fact, there are no Tin Pan Alley standards on Till Then -- no George Gershwin, no Irving Berlin, no Cole Porter, no Harry Warren. And that's just as well because as dynamic as those legends were, worthwhile popular music didn't end with Tin Pan Alley (contrary to what the Stanley Crouch/Wynton Marsalis crowd would have listeners believe). Perez, thankfully, is smart enough to realize that -- and on Till Then, he finds the acoustic post-bop possibilities in melodies by Stevie Wonder ("Overjoyed") and Joni Mitchell ("Fiddle and the Drum") as well as several Latin American legends, who range from salsa innovator Rubén Blades ("Paula C") to Brazilian star Milton Nascimento ("Vera Cruz"). Perez has long had a pan-Latin outlook -- in other words, he looks to different parts of the Latin world for musical inspiration -- and Till Then reflects that. Anyone who interprets Chico Buarque's "Trocando Em Miúdos" (another great Brazilian melody), Cuban artist Silvio Rodríguez' "Rabo de Nube," and Chilean singer Violeta Parra's "Gracias a la Vida" on the same CD obviously isn't limiting himself to any one particular area of the Latin spectrum. While Till Then is far-reaching and unpredictable, it's also focused and cohesive; clearly, Perez knows exactly what he's doing on this inspired addition to his catalog. ~ Alex Henderson

This CD, Freddie Hubbard's last Blue Note release of the 1960s (with the exception of the blowing session The Night of the Cookers), adds two numbers to the original LP program and features the great trumpeter in three challenging settings ranging from a sextet to an octet. Hubbard uses such sidemen as altoist James Spaulding, tenors Joe Henderson and Hank Mobley, the euphonium of Kiane Zawadi, pianists Harold Mabern, McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock, bassists Larry Ridley, Bob Cranshaw and Reggie Workman, drummers Clifford Jarvis, Pete La Roca and Elvin Jones, the congas of Big Black and on one song bassoonist Hosea Taylor. The set is comprised of seven diverse Hubbard originals and, even though none of the songs caught on to become standards, the music is quite challenging and fairly memorable. ~ Scott Yanow
This excellent 1966 set features a diverse range of ensembles, all lead by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. The first is an octet, featuring congas and a euphonium; the second, a seven-member group, including the great McCoy Tyner on piano; the third is a sextet that boasts drummer Elvin Jones and Herbie Hancock (who doubles on piano and celeste). James Spaulding lends his alto sax and flute to two of the groups, and Joe Henderson is in two as well (his melodic, yet adventurous, tenor sax playing is especially notable). Also featured are tenor player Hank Mobley, bassist Reggie Workman, pianist Harold Mabern, and drummer Pete La Roca.

RVG Legacy's 14-track Dizzy Gillespie best-of may seem unnecessary: does the world really need another Dizzy anthology? Yet there is everything to recommend the set. Boasting an excellent track selection, sharp sound, and an overview of the bop pioneer's most crucial innovations, NIGHT IN TUNISIA is as fine a choice for a crash course in bop education as any. With the rumbling, swinging title track (one of the artist's finest and most widely recognized compositions), "Anthropology," and the Latin-soaked "Cubano Bop," the set features one highlight after another. Naturally, Dizzy's trumpet beams throughout, sounding like nothing less--even all these years later--than a clarion call to new heights.
Many arguments can be made as to which cuts constitute the "very best" of Dizzy Gillespie. These 14 cuts can certainly be argued for in making a solid case for the great trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. These tracks, all of which were cut for RCA between February of 1946 and July of 1949, still sound vital and progressive in the 21st century. The set kicks off with the title tune, featuring Diz with Don Byas, Milt Jackson, Al Haig, Ray Brown, J.C. Heard, and Bill DeArango. Clocking in at just over three minutes, the advanced harmonics and rhythmic invention is still startling. Thelonious Monk's "52nd Street Theme" and the Charlie Parker/Diz "Anthropology" are also included from this session. Check out DeArango's guitar solo on this last cut; it's blazing yet fluid and deeply bluesy. There are many big-band sides on this platter as well.
