Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles Jerry Schatzberg's STREET SMART is a multi-layered story dealing with the politics of city life--on the streets, and in the office. Caught unprepared with a deadline he can't miss, moral-free Manhattan journalist Jonathan Fisher (Christopher Reeve) completely fabricates an article about "Tyrone," a successful pimp. The story becomes a sensation, and Jonathan is turned into a media star. But Jonathan's mendacity comes back to haunt him when a shrewd, vicious pimp named Fast Black (Morgan Freeman) wants to meet him, for "Tyrone's" tale resembles his own life a little too closely. Causing even greater trouble is the D.A.'s office, who wants to see Jonathan's notes (which don't exist), for evidence that could convict Fast Black of murder. As a result, Jonathan finds himself caught in a vicious cycle of lies that could easily end his career--and maybe his life.
As the film gains momentum, it splits into two stories: first, Reeve's transition into a highly popular television reporter; and second, Fast Black's relationship with Punchy (Kathy Baker), a veteran hooker who hasn't become completely hardened. These heated street scenes provide STREET SMART with its greatest energy, which is due in large part to the electrifying performances of Baker and Freeman (who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar). Theatrical release: March, 1987.

A HARD DAY'S NIGHT presents a fictionalized day in the life of the Beatles as they give a performance on a live television show. Filmed just a month after their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964, this film--the Beatles' first--introduces us to the unique personalities of each member of the band. The film opens with the Fab Four boarding a train mobbed with adoring young fans (mostly women) as they attempt to travel to the television studio in London. The antics of the band during rehearsals and makeup application provide a large part of the comic material in this feature, though there are other moments of pure hilarity. The unscripted vignette featuring a hangover-suffering Ringo is especially funny, particularly when he is arrested and risks having to miss the broadcast. None of this goes unnoticed by the director of the show, played by Victor Spinetti, who went on to become a recurring cast member in Beatles movies. Ray Milland stars as alcoholic writer Don Birnam in Billy Wilder's first unabashedly dramatic film, and one of the first to deal in such painstaking detail with the disease of alcoholism. Don shares an apartment in New York City in the 1940s with his brother Wick (Phillip Terry) who has his hands full trying to deal with his brother's drinking problem. One night, Don encourages his brother to take his girlfriend Helen St. James (Jane Wyman) to hear some music only so that he can be out from under their watchful eyes. Taking the money left for the maid, he goes out to buy some liquor, stashing one bottle in the chandelier. When he goes to the bar the next day, Nat (Howard Da Silva), the owner berates him for treating his girlfriend badly and warns him that he's on a path toward death. Don returns to the apartment to try to work on his novel "The Bottle," but consumed by self-doubt, goes to another bar, and steals a woman's purse to buy a drink.
