(1 Customer Review)
Internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Jackie Ryan teams up with special guest jazz masters Toots Thielemans on harmonica, Ernie Watts on saxophone, and a host of other top flight musicians on this unique CD of jazz, swing, gospel, samba and soulful bal
Personnel includes: Jackie Ryan (vocals); Ernie Watts (saxophone); Allen Smith (trumpet); Toots Thielemans (harmonica); Jon Mayer (piano); Ruth Davies (bass); Omar Clay (drums); Yutaka Yokakura. Recorded at Entourage, Hollywood, California; Mobius, San Francisco, California and Visual Rhythm, Alhambra, California. On the surface, this seems to be just another excellent vocal jazz recording by a popular San Francisco-based singer whose best-known longtime gig is the London club Ronnie Scott's. Yet the exotica of Ryan and the music she chooses is so much a part of the story, from her sultry Italian on "Estate" to her crafty Portuguese on Jobim's joyful samba "Anos Dourados." Her bio makes multiple mentions of her multiethnic background -- Mexican, Irish, and French -- perhaps to justify her ability to tackle the foreign tunes. Yet at heart, she's an honest to God jazz singer in the Sarah Vaughan/Betty Carter mode who seems coziest on lush ballads like the title track and fun swingers like "A Sleepin' Bee" and Ellington's "Jump for Joy," which starts as a sparse, stylish duet with voice and John Wiitala's bass before incorporating Allen Smith's playful muted trumpet. Each song has a credited arranger, an obvious ode to the care with which Ryan chose and interpreted this varied material. Although her name is still not on the lips of mainstream jazz fans, Ryan's association here with legends like Toots Thielemans (who adds harmonica romance to tunes like "Estate") and Ernie Watts (whose inimitable tenor infuses three tunes), along with her diverse talents, will help expose her to a well-deserved wider audience. ~ Jonathan Widran

This Heart Of Mine
$10.19 No small part of the reversal of fortune enjoyed by the animated-film division of the Walt Disney company starting in the late 1980s and continuing through the '90s and into the 2000s was the decision to make movie musicals using proven writing and performing talents from the worlds of musical theater and, particularly, adult contemporary pop. The renaissance really started in 1989 with show music writers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's music for The Little Mermaid, which resulted not only in a box-office hit, but also a multi-platinum soundtrack. An important next step occurred with Menken and Ashman's Beauty and the Beast (1991) -- the title song sung by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson -- producing a Top Ten pop hit. The rest was history, and that history is reprised on this disc, which presents the work of pop stars on subsequent Disney animated features including The Lion King (1994; Elton John's "Circle of Life," written by John and show music veteran Tim Rice); Pocahontas (1995; Vanessa Williams' "Colors of the Wind," written by Menken and show music veteran Stephen Schwartz); Mulan (1998; Christina Aguilera's "Reflection," written by Matthew Wilder and show music veteran David Zippel); Tarzan (1999; Phil Collins' "You'll Be in My Heart" and "Strangers Like Me"); and The Emperor's New Groove (2000; Sting's "My Funny Friend ...

$15.19 Michael Reno Harrell is an award winning songwriter, as well as a veteran storyteller and entertainer, and he’s from the South…the Southern Appalachian Mountains to hone it a bit finer. Four decades of performing have taken him to over forty states and many foreign countries. One could compare Michael’s performances to your granddaddy’s pocket knife, well warn and familiar feeling, but razor sharp and with a point. He gets the job done. His recordings top the Americana Music Association charts year after year. Michael’s combination ...
