Singer/songwriter Martin Sexton blends passion similar to Bruce Springsteen with the raucous excitement of Jeff Buckley and the abrasive wordplay of Jackson Browne and Living Colour's Corey Glover. On his sophomore effort, 2000's Wonder Bar, the Boston-bred falsetto cues up his thick, gruff vocals for a soul-slicker that is quite genuine. Again, Sexton plays with genre-specific hums of roots rock, folk, country, blues, and R&B, and the initial sound on Wonder Bar is solid. The 11-track song list soars with humorous emotions; songs such as "Hallelujah" and "Things You Do to Me" showcase such free-spirited rock & roll. Sexton, however, is a love sucker. Like his crooning counterparts (Ryan Adams, David Gray), Sexton plays into the heart of things, reaching for the deepest mystery and sweetest piece. The inevitable British take on the Seattle sound leans more toward Nirvana's distorted guitars and cynical lyrics than toward Pearl Jam's classic rock guitar riffs and sincere words. Forcing vowels out of his throat while moaning that "fame is a whore," Gavin Rossdale sounds eerily like Kurt Cobain might have with a British accent. And a few of the songs on the band's debut album, like "Little Things," with its four-chord riff and loud-soft-loud dynamic, openly invite the comparison.

Usually that phrase conjures up visions of hard rockers like Radio Birdman or arena poppers like INXS, but Conrad, like countryman Richard Davies, follows the path of capital "P" pop: pure chamber-psych pop with highly arranged songs, loads of tempo shifts, complicated sounding chords and song structures, and sparkling harmonies. Highlights like the Syd Barrett-meets-the Beatles "People Who Care," the beautiful pedal steel-driven drift of "Emily & Liam," the vocally adventurous and melancholy "Hideaway," and the Youngian country balladry of the epic "Enough of This" are moments that put Conrad firmly in the up-and-comer category. There are a few problems with the record: The three songs right in the middle of the disc, "The Day Before She Died," "Magneto," and "M.
