EMI's Life of Riley: The Lightning Seeds Collection does little to convince the listener of the Lightning Seeds' place in pop history, as it omits nearly all of the band's most important tracks. Despite the inclusion of the compilation's catchy namesake and a Britpop gem from Ian Broudie's first band, Care, called "Flaming Sword," there's nothing here of substance. Instead of hits like "All I Want" or "Pure," the listener is treated to obscure album cuts and forgettable covers of Tim Hardin's "Hang On to a Dream" and Thunderclap Newman's "Something in the Air." Life of Riley: The Lightning Seeds Collection has its moments, but fans of the band -- or just sunny Britpop in general -- would be better off picking up Epic's superior Like You Do...Best of the Lightning Seeds. ~ James Christopher Monger

Life Of Riley album
$9.55 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," ...
| | Jimmy Buffett Buffet Hotel CD (2009)
Life Of Riley CD music
$9.74 Since Jimmy Buffett never leaves his comfort zone, it's hard to call 2009's Buffet Hotel a return to roots but, in a way, it is. Discounting the mock rap on "Turn Up the Heat and Chill the Rosé," this album doesn't even have the lingering country and reggae flavors that seasoned 2006's Take the Weather with You, with all of the songs riding a cool, mellow country-rock wave, the kind that has been his stock-in-trade since the `70s. There's a difference between being part of a tradition and being stuck in the past and Buffett is surely in the former, not shying away from the new millennial mess, admitting that we all have "A Lot to Drink About" and never flinching from his advancing ...
| | Mark Knopfler Get Lucky CD (2009)
Life Of Riley music CDs
$15.65 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different ...
| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CD (2009)
Life Of Riley songs
$8.79 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other ...

| | Bon Jovi Circle CD (2009)
Life Of Riley CD music
$11.17 Bon Jovi's 2007 effort, LOST HIGHWAY, found New Jersey's finest brandishing a Nashville-tinged, commercial rock/country crossover sound that wasn't too far a stretch from their usual arena rocking anthems for the Everyman. And where that album sometimes tried too hard to fit into the conventions of trad country, sacrificing some of the fist-pumping potency of their best `90s-era efforts in the process, ...

| | Carnival CD (1969) (Import) Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom
Life Of Riley album
$15.99 Carnival was formed by ex-members of Sergio Mendes's band Brasil '66, who took the Brazilian sound of their previous band and married it to bright, mainstream pop. Their self-titled album is a fine, late-1960s period piece.
The Carnival's self-titled album from 1969 sounds quite a bit like the sunny blend of L.A. sunshine pop and easy Brazilian rhythms that Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 were dishing out at the time. No big surprise there as the Carnival was made up of Brasil '66 exiles Jose Suares and Janis Hansen. They were joined by Terry Fischer, a member of the Kim Fowley-produced girl group the Murmaids and bassist Tommy Neal. The music was bolstered by the presence of the legendary Wrecking Crew, and the whole deal was overseen by producer Bones Howe. The group covers pop tunes almost exclusively, wrapping "Turn, Turn, Turn," "Walk On By," "Sweets for My ...

Life Of Riley music CDs
$13.49 Gear Fab's Psychedelic States series, which collects vintage '60s garage rock singles on a regional, state-by-state basis, affords an utterly fascinating look into a time in the U.S. when every basement and garage seemed to have a band rehearsing in it, the visible (and audible) explosion of a true suburban folk movement. Most of the rare and regional singles included in these compilations are badly recorded, poorly performed, and clichéd and derivative at almost every level, which, of course, is probably ...

| | Sasquatch II CD (2006)
Life Of Riley album
$12.05 It's one thing for a power trio hailing from trendy L.A. to go consciously against the grain, embrace a musical genre as unfashionable as classic, retro-hard rock with stoner nuances, and call themselves Sasquatch, of all things. But when that band's impressive first album handily puts contemporary efforts of most other, truly backwoods-living denizens (Bigfoot and human alike) to shame, well then the triple heaping of insult upon injury upon irony must have made for quite a few hard-to-swallow chicken-fried-steak dinners in the stoner rock wilderness. Even worse (for the competition, not the fans), Sasquatch have done it all again -- and more -- with their modestly titled second album, ...
