15-track British compilation release by Music Club . Each of the genuine Wu members -- RZA , Ol' Dirty Bastard , Raekwon , GZA , Masta Killa , U-God , Inspectah Deck , Method Man , and Ghostface Killah -- show up at least once, usually in support of the many Wu spin-offs as well as a few non-clansmen: tha Liks (alongside Ol' Dirty on 'Hip Hop Drunkies' ), Cocoa Brovaz (alongside Rae on 'Black Trump' ), and Big L (alongside Shyheim on 'Furious Anger' ). The roster of talent on Wu-Tang Collective is dizzying and diverse, no doubt.
As the Wu-Tang Clan began to expand their empire during the late '90s, a series of hodgepodge albums surfaced that jumbled mainstay clansmen alongside a bunch of questionable affiliates like Sunz of Man and Killarmy. These spotty releases -- namely the Wu-Chronicles series, Wu-Syndicate, and The Swarm -- blurred the line between various-artists compilations and outright albums, and furthermore often billed RZA as executive producer when in fact they featured little of his actual productions and likewise often billed big-name Wu rappers when in fact they featured mostly no-name affiliates. All shadiness aside, this run of releases did include some great moments, several of which are compiled on Wu-Tang Collective, a 15-track British release by Music Club. These recordings, dating between 1927 and 1929, are a unique body of work: work songs, minstrel numbers, rags, and what we now define as the blues, all offered in an unpretentious form that would have been every bit as compelling had Henry Thomas cut them this way 40 years later. Percussionist, turntablist, composer, and DJ Raz Masinai has been moving in and out of New York's underground dub scene for years as a member of the influential duo Sub Dub, as a founding member of the turntablist collective Rotor, and as a solo artist. As a soloist he records mainly under the name Badawi, and his third ROIR release under that moniker is yet another significant departure from past directions. Soldier of Midian finds him moving away from reggae or hip-hop-inspired beats and dipping into a Middle-Eastern groove; trance-inducing, multi-layered percussion shimmers and percolates around keening reed instruments, dulcimer, and the occasional electric bass, and vocals are mainly limited to wordless ululations. While the elements involved are kaleidoscopic, their density makes the tracks somewhat samey; put too many colors and textures on a canvas and it all starts looking like grey eventually. ...
