Includes liner notes by Neil Young. Prior to its release, Greendale received more attention than any Neil Young album in years, but it wasn't positive. Young hauled out his concept album -- about an extended family in a small town called Greendale, and how they're torn apart by a murder -- to unsuspecting audiences, who by and large were not happy about spending anywhere from 55 to 85 dollars to hear a dense convoluted song cycle, complete with rambling narrative from Young, for the first hour of the show and not hearing many hits in the remainder of the set. Early in the summer of 2003, there was a brief blast of stories about this quasi-scandal, setting the stage for the late-summer release of the album: it got Young some needed press, and announced that unlike his last several albums, Young was actually trying this time around. Frankly, he needed a change. Ever since 1994's Sleeps With Angels -- or, if you're less charitable, 1990's Ragged Glory -- he had been drifting, playing with different groups, never quite mustering up enough energy to assemble a consistent set of songs whenever he headed into the studio. Here, the story and the setting give Young a hook for the record, a common theme that he can rally around, and the album benefits so much from that focus that it doesn't really matter that the story is convoluted beyond comprehension; the plot matters so much that it winds up not mattering at all. Close attention and repeated listens offer few rewards to the careful listener, because Young doesn't really say much of anything here, no matter how elaborately he says it. Learning more about the narrative -- whether it's through the simultaneously released DVD of the Young-directed film Greendale, hearing his rambling on-stage between-song narratives, or reading apparent transcriptions of these ramblings in the liner notes -- illuminates the story slightly, even as declarations like "When I was writing this I had no idea what I was doing, so I was just as surprised as you are" emphasize the suspicion that there's not much meaning in the whole enterprise. All this doesn't really matter because Greendale works as a record -- it ebbs and flows and it holds together, playing as a unified whole on a level he hasn't approached since Ragged Glory. As Young says in the liner notes, these are things "you can't tell by listening to the songs, you have to listen to the instrumentals to get this," and while that is meant to apply to one of the many Crazy Horse-fueled meandering improvs, it really applies to the album as a whole since Greendale connects in its overall picture, not the details. Sometimes, such as the quietly eerie and affecting "Bandit," the songs stand apart from the concept, but usually the lyrics are too devoted to his winding narrative to be their own entities. Then again, Greendale was designed to be an interconnected song cycle, and if the narrative neither works nor signifies much, it nevertheless kept Young focused on the construction of the album, whether it's giving theRolling Stone (12/25/03, p.111) - Included in Rolling Stone's "50 Best Albums of 2003" Rolling Stone (9/4/03, p.142) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...GREENDALE has a tattered, buzzing, demolike sound, rude as any Young has put out..." Neil Young Greendale Songs Greendale Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Better than ever I think it´s Young´s finest work from last five years. You feel the pleasure of hearing this material from the beggining to the end. 78 minutes of pure Young, lyrics, the guitar, and Crazy Horse sounds perfectly assembled, integrated. In one words: delightful, a gift for all senses Submitted by disgleas (Montevideo, Uruguay) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
ONE WORD=PHENOMENAL!!!! The first concert I went to not knowing the material ahead of time. Neil & Crazy Horse never dissapoint, it's like they split the earth wide open! Not only was the band on stage, but there was a large movie screen which ntied into the lyrics, and even like a broadway production there were actors upon the stage as well playing the parts of the people in the story. Unbelievable concept album. Submitted by a reviewer (Mr. B in San Diego, CA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Neil The Story Teller This is not the best work Neil has done in his career but...it is an interesting and nice sounding cd.
The fictional story of Greendale.
Neil still has a fresh creative style after all these years and seems to be nowhere near ending his career. Submitted by chicknet (Chicopee, Ma. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Visit Neil's Masterpiece Who could have ever predicted that at this point in a long and varied career that Neil Young would produce his best album? Greendale is a work of art that presents many of Neil's favorite themes and is right up-to-date with what is going on in the world right now. If you can compare it to anything, it is like some of Nathaniel Hawthorne's best work, yet for our modern era. In Greendale, the devil is a real person who manipulates circumstances for the worse, yet the Green family perseveres, striving to stick together and do good works. Neil's long time cohorts, Crazy Horse (without Poncho this time) is the perfect sound to perform this wonderful music, with many songs in a bluesy groove, yet with pretty vocal hooks that you will be humming for a long time. If you get a chance, see them perform this live in concert (with Poncho on keyboards) and watch the elaborate stage production that tells more of the story. You will want to buy a bullhorn and join in the chant, "BE THE RAIN". Submitted by a reviewer (Taylor, Texas, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Neil Young Reactor CD (1981) Remastered
Greendale
$6.45 First time on CD, digitally remastered reissue of 1981 album, packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. This hard rocker initially peaked at #27. Reprise. 2003.
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar). Crazy Horse: Frank Sampedro, Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina. Producers: Neil Young, David Briggs, Tim Mulligan, Jerry Napier. Recorded at Modern Recorders, Redwood City, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Neil Young employs Crazy Horse to help him bash out a guitar-drenched hard rock set made up of thrown-together material. The group plays fiercely, as usual, but the lyrics are sketchy, seemingly improvised (the nadir is the nine-minute "T-Bone," which consists of the lines "Got mashed potato/Ain't got no t-bone" repeated over and over), and frequently cranky, as in "Motor City," which finds Young criticizing Japanese cars, and "Rapid Transit," which takes a belated swipe at new wave music ...

| | Todd Rundgren Faithful CD (1976)
Greendale
$7.59 Personnel: Todd Rundgren (vocals, guitar); Roger Powell (keyboards, synthesizer); John Siegler (bass); John Wilcox (drums, percussion). Todd Rundgren considered 1966 the beginning of his professional musical career, largely because the Nazz formed around that time. As a celebration, he recorded Faithful. Presumably, Faithful celebrates the past and the future by juxtaposing a side of original pop material with a side of covers. Actually, "covers" isn't accurate -- the six oldies that comprise the entirety of side one are re-creations, with Rundgren "faithfully" replicating the sound and feel of the Yardbirds ("Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"), Bob Dylan ("Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine"), Jimi Hendrix ("If Six Was Nine"), the Beach Boys ("Good Vibrations") and the Beatles "("Rain," "Strawberry Fields Forever"). All of this is entertaining, to a certain extent, especially since it's remarkable how close Rundgren comes to duplicating the very feel of the originals. Still, it's hard to see it as much more than a flamboyant throwaway, especially when compared with the glorious second side. For the first time since Something/Anything?, Rundgren allows himself to write and -- more importantly -- record straight-ahead pop songs. Certainly, A Wizard, A True Star, Todd and Initiation had their share of great songs, but they weren't delivered as pop songs; they were telegraphed as art. Here, Rundgren delivers pop and rock songs with ease, letting the melodies glide to the forefront. ...

| | K-Earth Oldies Radio: Motown, Soul & Rock N' Roll: Rock N' Roll CD (2003)
Greendale
$12.15 This third installment in the series specially crafted by Collectables for WSNI FM focuses on the greatest hits of one of the most revered labels in pop music: Motown. With every single one of the 25 songs contained herein being either a chart-topper or a major hit, it's hard to refute this as nothing more than an extremely well-sequenced compilation covering Motown's glory years, and at an economically sensible price, it serves as an ideal starting point to those unfamiliar with Motown's vast arsenal of soulful hits. Simply outstanding from start to finish.~ Rob Theakston Collectables' 2003 compilation WCBS FM: Motown, Soul and Rock n Roll - Motown delivers 25 tracks of pure Motown gold. It was put together by Joe McCoy from WCBS FM and plays like what one might hope the radio would sound like in heaven. Every song is a hit and the disc flows like a river of sweet champagne. The songs are a fine mix of up-tempo dancefloor fillers like the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman" and the Contours' "Do You Love Me" and heartbroken ballads like the Temptations' "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." The only flaw in the presentation is the duplication of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Both Gladys Knight's and Marvin Gaye's version are included at the expense of some other Motown classic. Still this is a set that is destined to get listeners up on their feet and dancing or at very least singing along at the top of their lungs. There are tons of Motown collections out there but this is one of the best. ~ Tim Sendra KFRC Oldies - Motown, Soul & Great Rock n' Roll: Rock n' Roll is a varied and quite solid 25-song collection of chart-toppers from the '60s compiled by Joe McCoy of WCBS. Now why a DJ from WCBS compiled a disc that is billed as a presentation of KFRC oldies is a question that will only nag at the most retentive of music fans. The rest will just be happy to enjoy the music, as it is first-rate from beginning to end. McCoy draws tracks from many different styles: folk-rock (the Mamas & the Papas' "Monday, Monday," Scott Mackenzie's "San Francisco"), girl group (the Angels' "My Boyfriend's Back," Lesley Gore's "It's My Party"), British Invasion (Manfred Mann's "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," the Troggs' "Wild Thing"), ...
