(1 Customer Review)
The title of the popular trumpeter and composer's latest triumph is a wistful reference to a language created in the late 19th century (by Dr. L.L. Zamenhof, who used the pseudonym "Dr. Esperanto") to facilitate communication between people of different lands and cultures. It's representative of the unique vibe of the collection, which features distinctive Euro influences drawn from the realms of trance, electronica, and acid jazz, with dramatic orchestral touches as well. Before those kick in, however, listeners are treated to an extension of the old-school brassy soul of B.W.B., the Warner Bros. ensemble of Braun, Kirk Whalum, and Norman Brown. "Green Tomatoes" is an old-school, Les McCann-flavored retro-funk explosion written by Braun over a groove and vocoder line originally composed by the popular London-based acid jazz outfit 45 Dip, led by Chris Beeman. Braun's eye for musical collaborations continues, with two tracks co-written and co-produced with keyboard legend Jeff Lorber (the heavy-grooving, Euro-minded "Sir W" and the party-minded free-for-all jam session "Stereo," with saxman Gerald Albright and keyboardist Gregg Karukas) and two with longtime Braun keyboardist Mitch Forman (the exotic and percussive, hip-hop- and jazz fusion-influenced "Zona Rosa" and the poignant two-minute duet closer "Mother's Day," fashioned as a tribute to their late mothers). Another new and highly elegant addition to the Braun production palette is his exploration of the harmonic possibilities of an 18-piece string section on four tracks. Braun's success in smooth jazz is due not only to his phenomenal trumpeting and picture-perfect melodies and grooves. There's always a commitment to new styles and adventures each time out, and the mix is irresistible. ~ Jonathan Widran

JazzTimes (11/03, p.110) - "An animated electronic dance beat meets moody, lyrical trumpet on 'Sir W,' and a skittery dance groove propels Braun's melancholy melody on 'Zona Rosa.'" Esperanto album
$9.29 Burgeoning smooth jazz superstar Steve Cole continues to bridge the gap between pop-jazz and classic R&B on his third studio album, NY LA. Featuring strong melodic statements and truly funky keyboards via the likes of Brian Culbertson and Marquis "Hami" Dair, NY LA is a moody and solid affair. From the disco-influenced "Off Broadway," which harkens back to the best work of the Crusaders, to the Donald Byrd-esque "Interlude IV," tenor saxophonist ...
| | Jeff Lorber Philly Style CD (2003)
Esperanto CD music
$11.95 The soul-jazz minded keyboardist has been a legendary pop-fusion and smooth-jazz artist for several decades, and producer Steven Dubin had been a huge smooth-jazz force for several years (working with Peter White, Richard Elliot and Najee). The two Philadelphia natives never crossed paths (despite having gone to the same high school and played the same clubs), however, until Lorber hired him to work on his album Kickin' It. This disc continues the fun, feisty and funky retro-soul vibe of that disc in an even fuller celebration of their Phillyness. Lorber is so well known for his old school Rhodes textures (which were ...

Esperanto music CDs
$11.69 If you're one of those who immediately starts retching when the phrase "smooth jazz" is uttered, you might as well move on right now; there's nothing about the new Joyce Cooling album that won't make you roll your eyes and lunge for the off button. But if you actually enjoy funky jazz with great hooks and propulsive beats and aren't bothered by a nice, glossy sheen, you'll find plenty to enjoy on the latest album by this very fine guitarist, composer, and singer. ...

$10.45 Since forming at the end of 2002, Girls Aloud have created their own brand of electro-pop chic. During the past year, while releasing a trio of top three singles, they have also been working on the follow-up to their debut album `Sound Of The Underground'. The result is brimming with the same brand of amused knowingness and louche sexiness as its predecessor and features the biggest party single of last year, `Jump', plus `The Show', `Love Machine' and their forthcoming Christmas ballad, `I'll Stand By You'. Includes 2 UK bonus tracks 'I Say A Prayer For You' & '100 Different Ways'. Polydor. 2004.
