| | Is It...Man Or Astroman? CD (1993)
Bandstand Boogie CD music
$10.65 Escapist treats abound from this mysterious, tongue-in-cheek collective from the Southern United States. Man or Astro-man? have an ear for yesterday's sounds of tomorrow, as they decorate their mostly instrumental tracks with obscure sound bytes from out-of-date sci-fi movies and forgotten TV shows. Silly, dangerous, occasionally sloppy, but never boring, their album Is It Man...or Astro-Man? is the answer for everyone running low on laser gun/go-go/surf/spy/cowboy/drag racing/'60s/bullfighter/Mars-invasion/motorbike music. Songs like "Taxidermist Surf," "Invasion of the Dragonmen," and "Journey to the Stars" (originally by the Ventures) gallop along with the energy of a dozen wild stallions headed for Neptune. "Nitrous Burn Out" is a fantastic bit of racetrack romp, liberally mixed with roaring pistons and accident bulletins along the way. With anything so aggressively "up" in nature, there are a couple moments that inevitably droop a bit in exhaustion, like the novelty filler of "Organ Smash" and the uncharacteristically ...

| | Hi-Lo's Happen To Bossa Nova/The Hi-Lo's Happen To Folk Song CD (2002)
Bandstand Boogie album
$11.95 The Hi-Lo's on Reprise reissues two of the Hi-Lo's albums on Reprise from 1963: The Hi-Lo's Happen to Bossa Nova and The Hi-Lo's Happen to Folk Songs. Both are uncharacteristic efforts that show the group's willingness to push the pop-vocal group format in new directions. The bossa nova album sets the quartet's harmonies to Brazilian beats and music, while the folk album applies traditional pop instrumentation and Four Freshmen-styled ...
| | Les Elgart Sound Ideas/Half Satin & Half Latin CD (2003)
Bandstand Boogie CD music
$10.65 This two-fer CD combines Les & Larry Elgart's 1958 album Sound Ideas with Half Satin & Half Latin released two years later. Originally these LPs were released separately on Columbia and had been out of print until they were reissued in 2003 on Collectables. This pleasant, lite jazz set includes the standards "But Not for Me," "I Could Write a Book," "Love for Sale," and "When the Sun Comes Out." Those who appreciate ...
| | Kenny Wheeler Music For Large And Small Ensembles CDs (1990)
Bandstand Boogie music CDs
$23.25 This two-disc set is a dazzling look at Kenny Wheeler's work as a composer. His breadth is stunning, from moody Oliver Nelson and Gil Evans-like expansiveness to compactly propulsive post-bop excursions. The first disc is taken up entirely with the eight-part "Sweet Time Suite."
Wheeler's scoring is bracing and emotive. Singer Norma Winstone is on hand for portions of it, offering a gloriously soaring counterpoint to the massed horn section. Wheeler's diverse background serves him well, as he's quite comfortable with both ...

| | Leonard Cohen Essential CDs (2002) Limited Edition; Remastered
Bandstand Boogie CD music
$15.95 Recorded between 1967 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Pico Iyer.
THE ESSENTIAL LEONARD COHEN manages the considerable task of documenting the career of a man many consider one of the finest songwriters in the English language. Easily on par with Bob Dylan and Paul Simon in terms of sheer poetic power, Canadian troubadour Cohen started out, appropriately enough, as a prose poet before beginning a recording career in the late 1960s. His early albums, amply represented here, found him accompanied chiefly by his own nylon-string guitar, delivering dark, but often romantic, reveries atop folk-based song structures.
By the late '70s, Cohen's lyrics and musical settings had both ...
| | Wes Montgomery Complete Live At Jorgies CD (2003) (Import) Spain
Bandstand Boogie music CDs
$13.59 Live tracks recorded at Jorgies Jazz Club in St. Louis, Missouri, August 19th, 1963. Studio tracks recorded in November 1963.
It's really too bad that the Definitive label did such a shoddy job of editing Complete Live at Jorgies. For starters, with no explanation this fine 1961 gig featuring Wes Montgomery with the Montgomery Brothers (and Billy Hart on drums) is split into two parts so the label can insert a 1963 studio date with Billy Taylor, Grady Tate, and Ben Tucker. Eric Mills' equally crummy liner notes tell you that this was done but offers no reason why. While all the music here is very fine indeed, the split is inexcusable because jazz gigs depend on momentum to come across, especially on a recording. That beautiful versions of "All of You" and "Summertime" are ...
| | Stay Loose... Jimmy Smith Sings Again CD (1968) Remastered; Digipak
Bandstand Boogie songs
$8.39 Given its overtly wacky album photos--featuring the artist striking acrobatic poses in a white jumpsuit and helmet--listeners might think that 1968's STAY LOOSE...JIMMY SMITH SINGS AGAIN is a novelty record. The only novelty here, however, is the greater vocal presence of the revered organ player, who usually released instrumental (or mostly instrumental) discs. Smith, in fact, lends his wonderfully gritty vocals to four of the album's seven ...
