Impressive performances of Xenakis´ chamber music .
This album covers some 45 years of creativity from one of last century´s leading composers in unrivalled performances. Xenakis´ chamber music consists of three string quartets, a trio, one quintet, one piece for violin and piano and several solo pieces for strings or piano. Some of these pieces may count as Xenakis´ masterpieces, though they are seldom heard in concert, if only because they demand the utmost of their performers. The Arditti Quartet qualifies for the job and, as usual, displays an unknown virtuosity and masterly handling of this notoriously difficult music. Its dedication to living music is once more proven and forms an impressive addition to its other recordings. The string quartets, one of them dedicated by Xenakis to the Arditti, are the highlight (if any) of this wonderful collection of music, not to forget the highly intriguing quintet. Claude Helffer, who worked with Xenakis on several occasions, is excellent in his performance of the piano pieces and outstanding in such memorable compositions as Mists (1980) and Evryali (1973).
