| | Josh Rouse 1972 CD Josh Rouse Discography of CDs
(7 Customer Reviews)
Initial pressings of 1972 contain a bonus DVD featuring the "Love Vibration" music video and a Josh Rouse documentary film.
From the period-specific cover design to the mellow grooves within, Josh Rouse's 2003 release 1972 is something of a time machine. With its feel-good vibes, earthy structures, and gorgeously crisp, expansive production (courtesy of Brad Jones), the album effortlessly transports us to the year in question. Moreover, it's clear that Rouse has been doing his homework--his excellent batch of songs bears the influence of '70 songwriters like Carole King, Marvin Gaye, and James Taylor, and groups like America and Fleetwood Mac. But Rouse is no mere mimic; he blends his inspirations with flair. His stylistic melange contains clear reference points, yet stands in its own bell-bottomed jeans.
When the intimate, singer/songwriter feel of the title track gives way to a steady, organ-driven groove on "Love Vibration" (which also features Wurlitzer, flutes, saxophones, and call-and-response back-up vocals), the die of 1972 is cast. Rouse has a way with irresistible hooks, too, and "James," with its soft funk and falsetto chorus, and "Comeback (Light Therapy)," with its smooth, catchy refrains, feel like old friends one hasn't seen in years. Appropriate for living-room lounging or road trips on a sunny summer's day, 1972 conjures a warm, charming nostalgia, even for listeners too young to remember the era.

1972 Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews And I thought the 70's was the decade taste forgot. I was born in 1968, so when I think of the 70's the Muppets, The Hair Bear Bunch and Boney M spring to mind. This is a great album and there isn't a duff truck here. In fact this CD is so good I've ordered his entire back catalogue. Love Vibration is the standout track with its call and response chorus but it only just nudges ahead. Makes me wish I was ten years older so I could have seen if the 70's really were this groovy. Submitted by Steve (East Sussex, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Mixed Reviews The first track is refreshingly different than anything else on the air at this time. A wonderful song.
The remainder of the tracks on the CD simply didn't appeal to me. Too bad the first song wasn't released as a single.

Excellent One of the best records I have heard in a long time. A pseudo-folk album, mixing Jim Croce with Coldplay. Check it out.

Retro yet Fresh This album does have a 70s-like sound, but I just wanted to point out that it has a fresh energy that is appealing even to those of us who weren't around in the early 70s. Submitted by Danielle (Asheville, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$10.49 Josh Rouse's seventh album Subtitulo is a warm and relaxed affair, much more so than any of his already quite warm and relaxed previous records. Produced again by Brad Jones, Rouse and a small group (Rouse on acoustic guitar, Jones on bass and pianos, Marc Pisapia on drums and percussion, some pedal steel from Pete Finney, and occasional ...
| | Gene Newton Celestial Plea CD (1993)
1972 CD music
$9.75 Celestial Plea is the first album from composer and synthesizer artist Gene Newton. The introduction to "Dreamscapes" offers an inner panorama of bubbling lifeforms, a caldron of crickets and swarming noises; the melodic theme, played by the harpsichord, strikes out with heartfelt assurance as angel voices light the way. The path of "Interstellar Echoes" is set by angel voices; a racing cadence and spacewinds quicken the pace, as melodies are handed off and embellished between instruments. Overall, Newton's sonic interpretation of the astral planes (most tracks are titled "Blue Ether," "Angel Dances," and the like) are crystalline, with each sound vividly etched. "Astral Matrix" begins with a cosmic blues refrain played by a lonely flute, then offers a cross-stellar romp to equal that of Vangelis. The album ends with the title track, a stately anthem of victory which could almost be subtitled "the meek shall inherit." The rock guitar track, "Flight of Fancy" seems out of place in the celestial firmament, but the spirit of the whole album is heartening (especially knowing that Newton is a high school music teacher. Wish my music teacher made this kind of music.) ~ Carol Wright
Contemporary composer Gene Newton has an interesting day job: he is an Information Technology Analyst for the State of Oregon. A former music and theater teacher for over two decades, Gene taught music and theater arts in Oregon and Washington. He taught public high school, directing concert choirs, symphonic choirs, jazz choirs and teaching courses in music technology. His jazz and choral ensembles were repeatedly awarded trophies and ...

1972 music CDs
$9.75 There's so much potential waiting to be unleashed by this band that it's scary. They could easily be the updated '60s Santana, full of Latin fire, or a classy Latin pop band. The problem with this record is that they don't seem to be sure which direction to take -- and are covering all of their options. On both "Caliente" and "Truenos Distantes" (which reappears in an English version as "Distant Thunder"), the arrangement peaks before exploding in a tasty guitar solo in best vintage Santana style, while on "Que Claros Es" guitar and accordion (uncredited, as is the excellent piano work) manage a very rootsy, delicious sound. Elsewhere, such as with "Sueño" and "No Te Quiero," they're a great pop band in the traditional sense -- memorable songs and excellent hooks. Cindy Padilla is a strong singer and guitarist/songwriter Cecilia Villar has the ability to become a powerhouse. But they still have a way to go -- there are really only eight songs on the disc, as two are repeated in Anglo versions, and they need more material. They also need a better ...
