Over the years, Hank Jones' work has been impressively consistent. The veteran pianist can, at times, be predictable and short on surprises, but rarely does one encounter a Jones album that is flat-out disappointing. Like other albums that Jones provided in the late '70s, The Trio doesn't take a lot of chances, but is solid and pleasing. Produced by Chiaroscuro president Hank O'Neal, this 1977 session finds Jones forming an acoustic piano trio with bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Bobby Rosengarden -- and not surprisingly, the three of them enjoy a consistently strong rapport on original material as well as familiar standards like "I'll Remember April," "Lullaby of the Leaves," and "S'Wonderful." Hinton and Rosengarden lay out on "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," giving the swinging yet lyrical Jones a chance to play unaccompanied. But most of the time, the musicians perform as a threesome on this album (which should not be confused with another Jones effort that has also been called The Trio -- that session was recorded for Savoy in 1955 and united him with bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Kenny Clarke). Originally released on vinyl, this album was finally reissued on CD in 2003 -- and without any alternate takes or bonus tracks. A lot of alternate takes were recorded at this 1977 session, but regrettably, all of them were lost. Hardcore collectors will be disappointed to learn that when O'Neal decided to reissue The Trio on CD, he only had access to the master takes. Nonetheless, this reissue is a highly rewarding, if less-than-essential, document of Jones in the late '70s. ~ Alex Henderson

Purchase Trio CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Sonny Stitt New York Jazz CD (1956) Remastered; Digipak
Trio album
$9.05 Sonny Stitt was so closely identified with Charlie Parker on the alto that even when he played tenor, his style was of the quicker-than-lightning variety with all the notes he could pack in a phrase in his soloing. Which makes listening to him, for all but the most ardent bebop fans, an endurance contest no matter how agile he was. Here, in a 1956 session with Ray Brown and Jo and Jimmy Jones backing him, there is some tempering ...

| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Trio album
$16.65 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount ...

Trio songs
$10.15 Recorded between 1992 and 1998. Includes liner notes by Alyn Shipton.
Subtitled The Best of George Shearing (1992-1998), Reflections truly is just that. This excellent compilation culls tracks from seven discs recorded while Shearing was in his seventies, placing him in different contexts performing a variety of mostly familiar material. His solo take on Dave Brubeck's "Summer Song" is especially beautiful, and the trio arrangements of "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You" are standouts. However, it's the varied instrumentation that keeps the ...

| | Fela Kuti Open & Close/Afrodisiac CD (2001)
Trio CD music
$13.95 Includes liner notes by Jacqueline Grandchamp-Thiam, Rikki Stein and Mabinuori Kayode Idowu.
Digitally remastered by Pompon (Translab Paris, Paris, France).
This CD reissue combines two early-'70s albums -- Open & Close and Afrodisiac -- on a single disc. Open & Close has just three songs, all in the ten- to 15-minute range, mixing some of the improvisational verve of jazz into Kuti's Afro-funk stew. There's a bittersweet, faintly melancholy tone to some of the progressions that differentiates this from much African pop of then and later, and the half-dozen percussionists set a good bed on which the horns and electric keyboards swap lines. "Gbagada Gbagada Gbogodo Gbogodo" is highlighted by extensive call-and-response vocals between Kuti and the band. The four (as usual, lengthy) songs occupying Aphrodisiac had been originally recorded in Nigeria as 45 rpm releases, though that album consists of re-recordings of these done in London in the early '70s. (Confusingly, one part of the liner notes gives the years 1972-1973 as the recording dates, while another section says they were cut in 1971.) While it's true that Fela Kuti's records from this period are pretty similar to each other, in their favor they're not boring. These four workouts, all sung in Nigerian, are propulsive mixtures of funk and African music, avoiding the homogeneity of much funk and African records of later vintage, done with nonstop high energy. The interplay between horns, electric keyboards, drums, and Kuti's exuberant vocals gives this a jazz character without sacrificing the earthiness that makes it danceable as well. "Jeun Ko Ku (Chop'n Quench)" became Kuti's first big hit in Nigeria, selling 200,000 copies in its first six months in its initial version. ~ Richie Unterberger
Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of the African musician's albums on one CD: Open & Close (1971) and Afrodisiac (1973). Of all African musicians, Fela Kuti probably needs the least introduction. He passed his half century with over 50 albums to his credit and became the radiant rallying point for African underclass and political prisoners everywhere. ...
