Recorded on February 22, 1972. Originally released on Cobblestone (9011). Includes liner notes by Doug Ramsey.
As strong as pianist Cedar Walton plays on his session, the main honors are taken by two of his sidemen. Tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley, whose career was about to go into a complete eclipse, is in brilliant form, showing how much he had grown since his earlier days. Baritonist Charles Davis, who too often through the years has been used as merely a section player, keeps up with Mobley and engages in a particularly memorable tradeoff on the lengthy title cut. Mobley is well-showcased on "Summertime," Davis switches successfully to soprano on "Early Morning Stroll," and Walton (with the trio) somehow turns the "Theme From Love Story" into jazz. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

Cedar Walton Breakthrough! Songs Breakthrough! Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Mobley & Trane I love Hank Mobley. But I just can't get comfortable with this. It's highly spirited, somewhat diverse, and rather challenging. Yet, to me, Hank seems to strive for things just out of his reach, as happened to so many of the pre-Trane saxophonists who caught the tail of the Giant. A for effort, C for results. Walton is strong, even on electric, and Jones & Higgins are locked in. Sound is a bit harsh, and slightly remote. Three stars. Submitted by vaughnrkeith (Milton, NH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? | | Wynton Marsalis Midnight Blues: Standard Time Vol. 5 CD (1998)
Breakthrough!
$7.59 "The Midnight Blues" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition.
Wynton Marsalis has often spoken of his interest in and love of the playing the music of Louis Armstrong, but here he seems to be more in tune with the spirit of Harry James. In each of these 12 arrangements for string orchestra and rhythm section, Marsalis is out front with his trumpet blowing long and brassy tones, making each ballad sound bluesy and regal. Like James, Marsalis is in love with his tone and his ability to commandeer the orchestra. The sameness of approach to each tune is a unifying force, making it clear that the point is to listen ...

| | Steve Turre Spirits Up Above CD (2004)
Breakthrough!
$13.85 Trombonist Steve Turre pays tribute to his former employer, the remarkable multi-reedist Rahsaan Roland Kirk, on this sincere effort. Turre and an all-star group perform nine of Kirk's songs plus the trombonist's "One for Kirk." But although the music is certainly well played, one misses Rahsaan's miraculous innovations. It was logical getting James Carter for the date since Carter, like Kirk, can play any reed instrument in any style. But surprisingly Carter is mostly pretty restrained during the project, as if he is going out of his way not to sound like Rahsaan. His usual high-energy multi-style improvisations are replaced by a more melodic and ...
| | Johnny Bothwell Street Of Dreams CD (1997)
Breakthrough!
$12.85 Johnny Bothwell was a swing altoist who enjoyed playing ballads in a style that mixed Johnny Hodges and Tab Smith with touches of Willie Smith. A featured soloist with the Boyd Raeburn Orchestra in 1944, Bothwell led his own big bands during 1945-1947, but never really caught on commercially. This 1997 CD has all of Bothwell's studio recordings as a leader (with the exception of two songs cut as a V-Disc), plus a two-selection session from 1949. The emphasis throughout is on ballads, although there are a few midtempo numbers that were performed for variety; subtle hints of the bebop revolution can be felt here and there. Bothwell is the main soloist throughout, although there are some vocals from Claire Hogan (his wife) and Don Darcy, plus occasional contributions from the mostly lesser-known sidemen. Two numbers ("Dear Max" and "Chelsea Bridge") are from an all-star combo that includes cornetist Ray Nance, tenor saxophonist Allen Eager, and baritonist Harry Carney. The high points of this definitive Johnny Bothwell set include "I'll Remember April," "Dear Max," Billy Strayhorn's "Strange Feeling," George Handy's "The Trouble with Me Is You," "From the Land of the Sky Blue Water," and, surprisingly, "Chiquita Banana." ~ Scott Yanow

| | Roy Hargrove Habana CD (1997)
Breakthrough!
$10.65 ROY HARGROVE'S CRISOL HABANA won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Performance.
At last, this highly touted, heretofore conservative Young Lion makes his move beyond neo-bop toward something new, fresh, and potentially important. He had to go to Havana to find it, starting with some jam sessions with Cuba's Los Van Van dance band in February 1996, which led to the formation of an exciting ten-piece U.S./Cuban band called Crisol. True, this album is a somewhat subdued recorded debut; as heard at the Playboy Jazz Festival in June 1997, Crisol is obviously capable of real thermal combustion. But one can still hear the embryo of its complex fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythm, bop, and progressive jazz impulses on this disc. Hargrove himself still seems dazzled by his new discovery, groping a bit for direction in his own solos. But challenged by the asymmetrical rhythms, he takes more chances and jaggedly strikes some fire. Irakere's Chucho Valdes, an awesome pianist and progressive-minded musician, is one of the anchors of the band, and Russell Malone contributes some of his meatiest, most ...
