While their fourth album The Sword of God chafed at religious mainstream, Quasi is once again unapologetic for their own social criticisms with another set of indie rock fun. Hot Shit, the band's second for Touch and Go and fifth overall, is Quasi's soap box for ridiculing post-September 11 actions, mostly by those non-liberal leaders of the U.S. of A. Janet Weiss and Sam Coomes aren't outright harsh or rude; they're funny in that cunning sort of way. This time, the 11-song set is much more organized; the lush cinematic feel found on the last effort is replaced with a sparsely foliated atmosphere, and that's what makes Hot Shit's theme so important. Quasi makes an impression without being high-handed. Shared vocal duties from Coomes and Weiss is their finest glazed pop effort yet, their closest to sounding like the Flaming Lips at times ,and the album's slick title track and the piano-driven honky-tonk ballad "Seven Years Gone" find Quasi's pop/rock work-in-progress enjoyably funkadelic. Surf-rock energy of "Good Time Rock N Roll" is a reminder of why they do the thing they do -- Quasi aren't spokesmen, they just want to make music that's artistically modern and intellectually amusing. Hot Shit works in this mold and it works well. Hints of string arrangements loom in and around the album's rowdy rock sound. Once the quirky avant-garde/indie rock jaunt "White Devil's Dream" arrives, it's pretty obvious that Quasi doesn't particularly care for conservative ideals. Coomes pretty much gives America's right-wing rulers (John Ashcroft, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Colin Powell) the finger and calls Tony Blair a sellout in the process. Quasi's crass sense of humor is in full force, but throughout their witty criticisms Quasi are imaginative songwriters and conscious of their curiously cool indie rock style. Hot Shit does it again and does it better! ~ MacKenzie Wilson

Spin (11/03, pp.114-16) - "...Coomes shares his pal and occasional bandmate Elliott Smith's knack for sinuous George Harrison melodies, and Weiss' fat John Bonham drumming makes the rockin' thing go 'round..." - Grade: B+ Entertainment Weekly (9/19/03, p.87) - "...Quasi's tough-love hipster blues have a raw, lived-in charm." - Rating: B Magnet (11/03, p.105) - "...With melodies that are more angular and less obvious. It's the most honest record - the most like both Quasis - the duo has recorded..." CMJ (9/8/03, p.4) - "...This record plays with the listener like a cat chasing a string....the Quasi duo kicks up dirty, smokin' songs that create a teasing, tangy blend of indie country rock..." Hot Shit album
$14.89 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly ...
| | Elliott Smith From A Basement On The Hill CD (2004)
Hot Shit CD music
$14.49 Elliott Smith's death in 2003 left a cavernous hole in the world of popular music. Tender, intimate, and painfully honest, the songs in Smith's catalogue capture the fragility of human existence with rare, breathtaking beauty. On his first posthumous release, Smith reaffirms his status as an extraordinarily gifted artist, giving fans yet another reason to mourn his tragic loss.
Conceived as an ambitious double album, FROM A BASEMENT ON THE HILL was ultimately narrowed down to 15 tracks by Smith's close friends, producer Rob Schnapf (Beck's MELLOW GOLD, Smith's X/O) and musician Joanna Bolme (the Minders, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks). The result is a heartbreaking collection of songs that plays like a retrospective of Smith's entire career. "Strung Out Again" reflects the early edge of ROMAN CANDLE; "Last Hour" recalls the bittersweet melodies of ELLIOTT SMITH; "A ...

Hot Shit music CDs
$31.25 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, ...

| | Django Reinhardt Swing Sessions, Vol. 1 CD (2002)
Hot Shit album
$15.95 The Swing Sessions, Vol. 1 features the first recordings Reinhardt made for Swing in 1937. The Swing label was formed in 1937 by Charles Delaunay and Jean Berard with the idea to "record good, unadulterated jazz," a goal at which they succeeded. The arrangements vary quite a bit from Reinhardt's Quintet of the Hot Club of France recordings. On the first ten cuts, the guitarist supplies an underpinning of rhythm for Coleman Hawkins & His All Star Jam Band and Dicky Wells & His Orchestra, respectively. A number of other cuts find Reinhardt in smaller duo, trio, and quartet settings. While all the material is first rate, the smaller settings allow Reinhardt's guitar to play a more prominent and perhaps more interesting role. Guitarist Louis Gaste and bassist Eugene d' Hellemmes provide Reinhardt with something like a stripped-down Hot Club backing for vibrant takes on "Saint Louis Blues" and "Bouncing Around." Reinhardt in turn provides backing for violinist Eddie South on "Eddie's Blues" and "Sweet Georgia Brown," then backs Stephane Grappelli on "I've Found a New Baby." There's a fabulous version of "Oh! Lady Be Good" with three violinists, and driven versions of "Charleston" and "Chicago" by the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Historically, The Swing Sessions, Vol. 1 offers another look at the sheer breadth of Reinhardt's work in 1937, as well as the birth of the first record label devoted exclusively to jazz. Musically, the album delivers 75 minutes of beautifully conceived and executed sessions. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

| | Candy Butchers Hang On Mike CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Hot Shit CD music
$9.75 Singer/songwriter Mike Viola names names on the third album by his nom de band, Candy Butchers, starting with the title, Hang On Mike. As usual, his autobiographical messages recur in his songs, the self-assuring title song echoed on the closing track, "Hunker Down." And why does Viola need to hang on and hunker down? Because, after two albums released by RPM (the imprint run by his manager, Danny Bennett, son of Tony) and manufactured and distributed by Sony, Hang On Mike, while still manufactured by the major label, is not being distributed or promoted by it, which means, essentially, that he has been reduced to indie label status. As a result, the album is a noticeably more modest production, its arrangements stripped down, its vocals and instruments close-miked in a dry sound that comes off more like a good demo recording than a professional album. But then, you might say that that sound is an appropriate one for Viola's songs, which are unusually personal even for him. Or, put it this way: in Candy Butchers' career-long Beatles obsession, which continues here, having aped the sound of British Invasion and psychedelic Sgt. Pepper's-style Beatles on earlier records, Viola is doing his version of the back-to-basics approach of The Beatles (aka "The White Album"). So, there is a warts-and-all approach, with count-ins and off-mike remarks, and no attempt has been made to clean up Viola's sometimes rough voice. All of that works to the benefit of songs in which he celebrates a successful relationship, starting with the leadoff track, "What to Do With Michael," to the extent of declaring "Let's Have a Baby." "Kiss Alive II" is a celebration of his friendship with longtime associate Todd Foulsham that even lists their presents of records to each other: "I gave you "'Bennie and the Jets'"/You gave me Kiss Alive II." ...
