While this may be the sophomore full-length album from New York's Every Time I Die, it hardly falls into the sophomore slump of which so many acts seem plagued. Instead, this five-piece has taken a smart, safe step with some variations of its metal-core style, but keeps things primarily intact, thus not alienating too many fans. One variation that has been infused into the sound is an occasional Southern rock guitar sound, another is vocals that aren't always at a heart-piercing scream: occasionally there is a singing melody. However, their overall sound on Hot Damn! is comparable to the likes of Norma Jean or Drowningman, while never being derivative. The band has also continued to work upon the intriguing tongue-in-cheek lyrics for which it's become known. With lines like "Maybe someday they'll find that I've washed up...Drag the lake, you'll find it's full of love" ("Floater"), the members of Every Time I Die continue to show that they've got more in their music than just something for moshing. ~ Kurt Morris

| | Vienna Teng Waking Hour CD (2002)
Everytime I Die album
$12.29 Even with her initial, tentative performances while still a student at Stanford, Vienna Teng caused an immediate stir in the California singer/songwriter scene. She self-released her debut LP, Waking Hour, in spring 2001, but consistent Bay Area buzz, strong website sales, and Teng's captivating live show led to interest from Massachusetts indie Virt, which signed her in May 2002. Three of Waking Hour's tracks were then remixed for radio by David Henry (Yo La Tengo; Guster), and an extensive tour brought one of the Bay Area's best-kept secrets to nationwide ears. Teng is an extremely intellectual songwriter who fills the spare moments of her piano-driven songs with wordy unions of personal emotion and reflections on the seasons. While she possesses a powerful voice, it's her command of melody and her subtlety that really stand out on Waking Hour. The Henry-produced tracks -- "Tower," "Gravity," and "Enough to Go By" -- could be considered chamber pop, with their shuffling percussion and lush, quietly surging stings accentuating Teng's gorgeous vocals. At the same time, "Daughter" and "Lullaby for a Stormy Night" are as delicate as hand-blown glass. As heartwarming as the latter song is, where Teng harmonizes with a child's voice on the reassuring line "Everything's fine in the morning/The rain'll be gone in the morning/But I'll still be here in the morning," she's elegantly jaded in the arch, duskily toned "Daughter." "Did you know you're so beautiful on the edge of summer?" she ...
| | Bjork Army Of Me: Remixes And Covers CD (2005)
Everytime I Die CD music
$14.29 Out of all of Björk's music, the menace, aggression, and no-nonsense attitude of "Army of Me" makes it one of her most distinctive songs. Army of Me: Remixes and Covers features equally distinctive, and very different, interpretations of the song by Björk fans from around the world; in the album's first three tracks alone, it jumps from the Canadian metal of Interzone; the Nouvelle Vague-esque French bossa nova of Grisbi; and the phasers-on-stun synth pop of Sweden's 50 Hertz, Haxor Och Porr, and Slagsmalsklubben. Any worries that a collection of 20 different versions of "Army of Me" could be repetitive are put to rest by the sheer diversity running through ...
