It was a long wait, but, 12 years after the fact, Fred Frith put together a live album of his group Keep the Dog, which had previously gone undocumented. Comprised of sax/flute player Jean Derome, guitarist René Lussier, keyboardist/harpist Zeena Parkins, sampling artist Bob Ostertag, and drummer Charles Hayward, Keep the Dog was formed by Frith in 1989 to perform a best-of repertoire of his career and remained his last rock group. By the time of this 1991 European tour, the unit had grown beyond its original format to include improvisation and some very different takes on familiar tunes. For fans of Frith's livelier, more vivacious writing, this is a must. The two sets (roughly 45 minutes each) include material from albums like Gravity, Speechless, and Cheap at Half the Price, plus pieces from the books of Art Bears and Massacre and his albums with Henry Kaiser and Étron Fou Leloublan's Ferdinand Richard. Derome and Lussier, at the time active as the duo Les Granules, feel right at home in Frith's quirky, occasionally childish tunes. Ostertag is the wild card, his sampler spurting out the strangest sounds and ambiences. The first disc begins with a string of tunes featuring Frith on violin; the lively "Hola, On Danse!" stands out while the "Propaganda Suite" takes us to the composer's darker, more serious side. The disc ends with a mad rendition of "Some Clouds Do" -- it's as close Frith gets to singing something and Hayward just keeps on pushing to speed up the tune. Disc two includes the group improv "That Home We Lived In," a reggae version of "True Love," and the beautiful "Norrgården Nyvla." The fun these musicians have together is highly communicative. This is an example of the Southern Rap "screwed & chopped" mix style.
Because of Yukmouth's label problems, it looked like his team-up with C-Bo would never see the light of day. Good thing it all worked out, since Thug Lordz is a great forum for these dark West Coasters. Don't expect a revelation. C-Bo and especially Yukmouth are still stuck on the same gangsta leans, spinning wheels, and every other tired topic that these thugs have beat to death. What separates In Thugz We Trust is that these boys are bouncing off each other here with a new quickness that's the way West Coast addicts always imagined. So much of the same-old posturing allows guests like Spice 1 and the great Killa Tay to really steal the show, but it's been years since Yukmouth or C-Bo have seen a track as live as "Killa Cali," and it turns their thugging from standard issue to compelling and urgent. They haven't seen production this inspired in a while either, although the varied tunes and moods suggest it's more C-Bo's influence than Yuk's. Not much here for backpackers or glittery R&B lovers, but the West Coast faithful get an album they can bump the whole way through. Having waded through tons of full-lengths for their one or two phat tracks, they deserve this. ~ David Jeffries

For their second album, Bananarama underwent a telling change in persona, from the flyaway-haired, overall-clad everygirls of Deep Sea Skiving into a sleeker and glammier look. Similarly, the album has a much more polished feel than the occasionally scattershot debut, which is not always a good thing; sticking with Tony Swain and Steve Jolley to produce the whole thing (the duo had shared production duties with three others on the debut), Bananarama traded their early tropical-tinged playfulness and ironic overtones for a more commercial sound that scored well on the charts (the terrific opener "Cruel Summer" was a worldwide hit, and several other tracks were U.K. hits) but was less unique than before.
