| | Selena Ones CD (2002) Limited Edition; Remastered
El Hijo Del Pueblo
$14.59 Essentially an upgrade of 1999's ALL MY HITS: TODOS MIS EXITOS, 2002's ONES features many of Selena's best-known singles from the earlier collection, adding a few collaborations and alternate versions to the mix. Murdered by the president of her own fan club in 1995, Selena already had a huge following at the time of her death, and this collection provides plenty of evidence for her popularity, including the tracks "Como La Flor" and "Dreaming of You," which respectively reveal the Texan singer's talents for performing Latin-tinged pop in both Spanish and English. Other highlights of ONES include "Buenos Amigos," Selena's emotive duet with Salvadoran crooner Alvaro Torres, and "Donde Quiera Que Estes," her lively, dance-oriented ...

| | Black Lips Let It Bloom CD (2005)
El Hijo Del Pueblo
$11.85 Genuine danger in music is all too rare. And although the members of Black Lips themselves aren't too frightful, their tunes--and the dark, anarchic vibes they generate--do intimidate. The title LET IT BLOOM, from a band that calls their music "flower punk," might imply a gentle crossover record, like John Denver covering now-mainstreamed punk standards, but the Atlanta band's sloppy brew is too rambunctious and wobbly too be pinned down. Electric blues, country, garage, and punk are all here.
The album highlight, "Hippie Hippie Hooray," channels both "House of the Rising Sun" and "Paint It Black" as Cole Alexander laughs through a thick fog of reverb over snake-charmer guitars, tambourine, and a random series of false endings. "Boomerang" is blues jangle a la SORRY MA-era Replacements, while "Punk Slime" holds true to its name. Black Lips are one of the few bands that can honestly claim to be keeping the spirit of rock & roll alive, and LET IT BLOOM is their best single slab of evidence to that ...

| | Doobie Brothers Takin' To The Streets CD (1976) (Import) England; Limited Edition; Reissue; Digipak; United Kingdom
El Hijo Del Pueblo
$11.79 This record represents the first recorded incarnation of the Doobies part II, the edition of the band featuring gravel-voiced keyboardist Michael MacDonald. It's clearly a transitional album, and a pretty big departure from the band's original style. You can hear the new direction most clearly on the album's two hit singles--the title tune and "It Keeps You Running." The closing track "Carry Me Away" marks the first appearance of the see-saw keyboard riffs later immortalized in "What A Fool Believes" (and later ripped off to good commercial effect by various MacDonald wannabes like Robbie Dupree). The rest of the album deals in various forms of funk.
Limited Edition European pressing of this album comes house in a miniature LP sleeve. WEA. 2006.
Recorded at Warner Bros. Recording Studios, North Hollywood, California.
