Country Love features a number of popular country artists performing some of their better-known ballads. There's no shortage of highlights here, for sure. Some of the more noteworthy moments include Kenny Rogers & the First Edition's "But You Know I Love You," Patsy Cline's "True Love," Johnny Cash's "I Love You Love You," and Loretta Lynn's "Faded Love." While it's indeed nice to see such a broad selection of performers featured here -- from old-timers like Cash and Brenda Lee to turn-of-the-century country-pop stars like Billy Ray Cyrus -- this variety ultimately undermines this collection's flow. You'll quickly find yourself looking for the fast forward after a few listens. Overall, though, it's hard to complain about the diversity given the generous quantity of music on this filled-to-the-brim, 18-track collection. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Georgia's Sugarland rose to great heights in 2009 - their 2008 album LOVE ON THE INSIDE reached platinum status, they recorded a prime-time network television special called LIVE ON THE INSIDE, which was then released in numerous packages that all sold well, and the group has sold out live shows globally. Therefore it seems to make sense for the group to release yet another stop-gap before the year runs out in lieu of a new studio album. GOLD AND GREEN is a hybrid holiday recording. It contains ten tracks, five of which are Christmas standards including a country boogie version of "Winter Wonderland," a "backwoods" "O Come O Come Emmanuel," and a steeped-in-reverence acoustic version of "Silent Night," sung bilingually in Spanish and English. The other five cuts are originals themed for the holidays. One has to give Sugarland some marks for trying to do something different than a standard-issue Christmas album.

Although for the rest of his life, underinformed fans of 1990s pop will forever be calling Darius Rucker "Hootie," the former Hootie & the Blowfish singer-songwriter makes his solo debut with a perfectly credible take on mainstream contemporary Nashville country. The laid-back, largely acoustic folk-pop of Hootie & the Blowfish was never that far removed from contemporary country in the first place, so only the fact that Rucker is the first major African-American country star since the heyday of Charley Pride makes the stylistic crossover out of the ordinary. First single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It," a Top 5 hit on the Billboard country charts even prior to the album's release, makes clear how comfortable Rucker is with the blend of the Eagles and the Dixie Chicks that is contemporary country radio, and tracks like "History in the Making" and "Forever Road" are equally fine examples of the form.

John Butler's debut album, Three, opens with his distinctive fingerpicked, slide-driven guitar that is to be the canvas for the remainder of the record. Joined by Rory Quirk on bass and Jason McGann on drums, the trio delivers an emotionally charged romp through ten tracks of earthy, bluesy jam band intonations. Paying homage to his Australian roots, the inclusion of the didgeridoo in the backdrop of several tracks plays nicely against his six-string grooves. The most accessible and shortest song on the record, "Pickapart," shows off Butler's picking prowess on an amplified 12-string acoustic guitar. Lyrically, Butler takes several political stances, from the pro-environmental song "Earthbound Child" to the anti-violence statement made by "Attitude." The passion in his vocals gives credibility to his fervor for these causes. Walter Thompson III is a world renowned Pagan recording artist residing in the Bay Area. Thompson is also a performance artist who specializes in the art form of Dance Poetry (Dancing A Poem). He has used several selections from the Thunderstorm Witch project as themes for some of his successful dance performances all over the world. Thunderstorm Witch (TW) was Thompson's debute spoken word masterpiece. Some slections from this CD have been reworked and remixed by many djs in the European underground dance scenes.Thompson's main purpose for recording the TW CD was to present small slices of his perspective of what it means to be a modern Pagan without being too literal or symbolic. This was definitely an experimental project that garnered much respect for Thompson as an exciting new artistic voice in the Pagan world community.
