Loudness was a Japanese hard rock quartet that had numerous hit albums in the 80's and early 90's. Thunder In The East reached number 74 on the Billboard charts in 1985. Wounded Bird. 2003.
With 1985's Thunder in the East, Loudness were faced with the daunting challenge of conquering heavy metal fans outside their homeland of Japan for the first time. Knowing that their early sound might prove a tad too heavy and complex for American audiences, the foursome rose to the occasion by dispensing their most melodic compositions ever. Yet, except for a few obvious examples, like "We Could Be Together," first single "Crazy Nights," and the power ballad "Never Change Your Mind," the band doesn't seem at all self-conscious about this transition. A few all-out headbangers like "Get Away" and "Clockwork Toy" are hammered out for good measure, but it's excellent tracks like "Heavy Chains," "The Lines Are Down," and "No Way Out" which obtain the best results by bridging the gap between both extremes and providing the best foundations for Akira Takasaki's incendiary guitar solos. In fact, were it not for singer Minoru Niihara's poor English-speaking skills (which quite understandably result in some amusing lyrical transgressions) little here belies the band's unique origins, and for that they should be applauded. Oh, and the impossibly long guitar riff of "Run for Your Life" has to be a world record. Backed by a ruthless marketing campaign concocted by record label Atco, Thunder in the East would actually do quite well in America. But Loudness' novelty status would soon wear off, and they would never again experience such success in America, despite some fine efforts in the following years. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

On nearly all counts, the debut from Los Angeles heavy metal quartet Steeler is an unremarkable, even generic release; but what makes the album important is the presence of Swedish guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen, which marks his official introduction to U.S. audiences. Malmsteen's playing -- which would later gain greater notoriety in the context of Alcatrazz and his own band Rising Force -- was nothing short of a revolution in guitar circles at the time of Steeler's release. Possessing metal pipes like few before him, leonine Steelheart yelper Michael Matijevic scarred the airwaves forever when he hammered the simply unmatchable chorus of the hairball "I'll Never Let You Go": ludicrous and sublime, akin to Whitney Houston hitting the hot spot in "I Will Always Love You." The opening strands of "Everybody Loves Eileen" bring Ratt out of the cellar before the cut curls into a pop n' fresh roller coaster ride. The remainders on this ridiculous dish are also overlong examples of excess but not as memorable, paying homage to Whitesnake and other flailing stylistic ventures. "I'll Never Let You Go" is available on some quality collections and no aficionado of poodle pomp should let that song go, otherwise leave Steelheart in peace with the music it helped lay to rest. ~ Doug Stone

IAN BELLPERFORMANCE HISTORY Always a part-time musician, Ian Bell has none-the-less performed professionally across Canada and in the United States for over a quarter century. On his own and with a number of ensembles he has appeared at numerous folk festivals (Winnipeg, Mariposa, Edmonton, Ottawa, Yellowknife, Owen Sound, Lunenberg, Montmagny, and others) and in concerts in every sort of venue. With the group Muddy York and along with Wade Hemsworth (composer of the Blackfly Song & Log Driver’s Waltz) Ian performed for two weeks in the Folklife Pavilion at Expo 86 in Vancouver, BC. In 1993 Ian was named “Folk Artist in Residence” for that year at Joseph Schneider Haus Museum, in Kitchener, Ontario. As a long-time freelance broadcaster, Ian has also worked on many occasions with Stuart McLean on CBC Radio’s Vinyl Café. Ian has co-written and served as musical director for 5 Vinyl Café national concert broadcasts. Ian has been a regular contributor to the weekend Fresh Air program on CBC radio and in 2004 performed as part of the “Roots of American Music” Festival at Lincoln Centre in New York City. In July 2005 Ian travelled to Estonia with long-time collaborator Anne Lederman to perform at the Viljandi Folk Festival.
