The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs  (2009)

CD $20.15  Top 500 Audio Samples
Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits as "One." We don't get to "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" until halfway through the second disc, and this jumbled, almost haphazard sequencing is a little disconcerting since it appears to follow no true rhyme or reason. Nevertheless, scattershot is still plenty entertaining when the music is as good as this, and this does have all the Bee Gees' big hits, plus live versions of songs they gave to others, so it's a good, swift way to get all this stuff at once -- at least for those who don't ...

CD $9.49  SALE 4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Lyrical acrobat Slim Shady returns after a five-year absence with his fifth major label release, continuing to strike the perfect balance between brooding insight and absolute silliness on 2009's RELAPSE. Opening single "Crack a Bottle" reunites Detroit's maddest rapper with his superstar mentor (Dr. Dre) and protege (50 Cent) on a fittingly funky tour de force. Eminem's RELAPSE, a double album released after five years of recorded silence, a record featuring Dr. Dre behind the boards for the first time since 2000, faced no shortage of the relentless pressure of expectations. A narrative of survival after facing down his demons in rehab unfurled with Eminem's usual twisted Swift-ian wit, RELAPSE should disappoint few fans (or critics for that matter) with its patented mix of hilariously spit venom and delirious self-loathing. Like Darren Aronofsky's adaptation of REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, 2009's RELAPSE finds the full horror element in drug addiction. Eminem's raps, for all their over-the-top humor, have always conjured up images fit for Fangoria, but as he comes out of rehab, seeking solace from his demons, Mr. Mathers amps up the gore on RELAPSE. Dre's beats lurk dark-thumping sinister while Em unleashes nightmare dreamscapes of murder, mayhem, and Britney-Spearsacide. One target who gets off surprisingly lightly this time around is his mother (a topic even Em admits in ...

In the early and mid-1960s, there were few duos more soulful than the Righteous Brothers. With their desperately impassioned R&B style, the blue-eyed Southern Californians crossed barriers of time, place, and audience. "Brothers" Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield joined forces with legendary "Wall of Sound" producer Phil Spector, resulting in one the greatest, most enduring hits ever, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling." The Brothers continued to combine their distinctive vocals with dense, emotionally dramatic musical backgrounds, resulting in a clutch of soul/pop 1960s classics many of which are contained here, including ...

THE PREACHER'S WIFE was nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "I Believe In You And Me" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. That renaissance gal is at it again. As in THE BODYGUARD, Whitney Houston does double duty as star and soundtrack provider for THE PREACHER'S WIFE. Don't look for her to be sticking to the commercial pop-R&B sound that served her so well on her last soundtrack album, though. THE PREACHER'S WIFE finds Houston reaching back to her roots in gospel, and collaborating with some stellar gospel artists, including her mother, Cissy. Several cuts here, including "Hold On, Help Is On The Way" and "I Go To The Rock," find the soulful Georgia Mass Choir supporting Houston in her return to the fold. On "He's All Over Me," Houston is joined by gospel great Shirley Caesar as well. On a more modern tip, Houston delivers "Somebody Bigger Than You And I," accompanied by a veritable who's-who of contemporary R&B, including her husband, Bobby Brown, and Brown's New Edition bandmates Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant. THE PREACHER'S WIFE not only shows where Houston is headed, it proves she hasn't forgotten where she's been. Like The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale before it, The Preacher's Wife is a soundtrack that also functions as a Whitney Houston album, but that's where the similarity ends. Where The Bodyguard was adult contemporary pop at its finest and Waiting to Exhale was a virtual encyclopedia of mid-'90s mainstream black pop, The Preacher's Wife is an attempt at gospel-soul. Much of the music on the soundtrack was composed by Babyface, who normally can pull off such fusion. Babyface's pop material and David Foster's production of Houston's "I Believe in You and Me" are the most successful cuts, bar Kirk Franklin's exuberant "Joy," which utterly puts the other gospel cuts on the album to shame. ...

Most of Graffiti is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads, as well as a couple relatively lighthearted Europop numbers. A handful of songs deal with his relationship with Rihanna, as well as the fallout from his assault of her. ~ Andy Kellman Most of Graffiti -- that is, the songs that do not detail what ex-girlfriend Rihanna and the rest of the world have done to him -- is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown clumsily emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads. Out of this portion of the album, only a couple songs leave a lasting impression, and when they do, the silly things that come out of Brown's mouth tend to be the reason; take "As stingy as you are, I think you ready," part of "Take My Time"'s chorus and hopefully no woman's idea of an effective bedroom line. A two-track patch of gloopy and gawky Europop, where he's on slightly better behavior, is at least more tolerable than the inane chest-puffing, but nothing comes close to the big singles from Brown's first two releases. The rest of this album could not have been voiced by anyone but a brat who pleaded guilty to the felonious assault of his pop star girlfriend, one who considers himself a victim. On "Famous Girl," sonically sprightly but otherwise acidic and full of contradictions, Brown cries foul at being cheated upon by his "heartless" ex but taunts "I might have cheated in the beginning." He accuses her of being a heartbreaker and then boasts "I've broken my share of hearts." Another jab, "I was wrong for writing `Disturbia,'" makes it plain that the song is about Rihanna. Both "Falling Down" ...

A soundtrack to a movie so appalling that it is infinitely wiser to let the record stand on its own merits. While Prince cavorted in purple kitchen foil and rode his Harley in high heels, the real star of the film, the music, was doing all the talking. A knit of funk and rock, a heavily stylized Hendrix guitar lick here and there, and a wilfully danceable backbeat all made for a huge commercial smash, and the first real international introduction for many people to a star-in-waiting. 'Darling Nikki' accidentally set the PMRC ball rolling, but the heady lilt of the title track and the crushing 'When Doves Cry' can pardon him that. Prince & The Revolution: Prince (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Matt "Dr." Fink ...

Dragonwyck Born Into Madness CD  (2009)

Contemplate yourself as a True US Metal worshipper, you must have heard in every way of Ohio based Dragonwyck? These four members have delivered an oustanding form of fist pounding, hard hitting Power Metal since the early 90's.

'First strike' (a demo release in'94), followed by "The Gathering" (an an EP -Fortunate / Hellion Records in 1996). The bands first, full length saw daylight two years later on and was entitled "Whisper In Darkness" (a twelve song album delivered once again by Fortunate / Hellion Records). WHISPER IN DARKNESS was a punch in the head, literally and figurative. Submerging the listener with pure strength, force, energy. Dragonwyck's Next effort was "Neurotica", (an independent 4 song EP unleased in 2007)Dragonwyck's singer radiates warmth, plenty of power and owns a special color, sounding very unique. A devastating rythm section and blistering axe grinding movements and shredding solo's. Possessing outstanding production and brilliant artwork, "Born Into Madness" is sure to please all fans of US Power Metal!REVIEW:RATING: 8 / 10Dragonwyck is a band that has been featured on The Metal Madman's online radio show. So hearing just one track from them was enough for me to look into them. Hailing from Ohio myself, I'm not sure how I've managed to miss these guys. Their musical style varies from power to thrash to a bit of even gothic metal, yet retain that classic heavy sound. Kenny shows many sides of his vocal ability including: clean midranges, high falsetto screams, and even some hardcore grunts.

The CD starting off with the blistering song "Bag of Bones" and never lets down. "Things Remembered" has a chorus that keeps me coming back and is the most memorable track off of the disc. I enjoy the drumming and guitar playing in the beginning of "Areas of Gray" as they create a great mood and show that gothic side of the band, including some Halford-like screams. "Burn" (no not the Deep Purple song) ends the album leaving the listener begging for more. The only thing I can say that I don't like is a few of the screams, yet this is merely a minor flaw for this disc. This CD's production is outstanding; in fact its mix is right up there with the best coming from European bands of the same nature. The CD booklet is embossed and makes for a great illusion on the eye.

The Metal Madman note : As stated above this band was recently featured on The Metal Madman™ Radio Show. Band shows a lot of potential, and for a self released disc, has a very good production to it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ...
