Emmylou Harris Stumble Into Grace Songs Stumble Into Grace Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Harris has become a rock icon. How do you really rate an Emmylou Harris album these days? She has been around for years and has long since left bluegrass and neo-traditionalist country music abandoning it in favour of roots-oriented folk and rock albums like “Wrecking Ball” and “Red Dirt Girl.” Harris wrote or co-wrote all the songs, a task that she doesn’t find easy to undertake, if her own words can be trusted. But then again, she must have had a lifetime of personal experiences so far, experiences that could form the basis for several future projects.
After repeated listening the qualities reveal themselves in simple and effective arrangements provided by producer Malcolm Burn, who has created a landscape of sound that fits her voice and writing perfectly. Several compositions are collaborations between Emmylou Harris and Kate & Anna McGarrigle – once the darlings of roots music and folk in the seventies. They support her on the album as well as Linda Ronstadt, Julie & Buddy Miller, Jane Siberry and Daniel Lanois to name but a few.
The album should be seen and heard as an entity rather than a record made up by individual songs that might end up on the charts. Though this is not a concept album in the usual sense, Harris is pretty damn close in pulling that off, on top of everything else. Decades ago she followed in the foot steps of Gram Parsons, defining and changing country music along the way. Now she has become an icon in her own right.
