||"Fitzgerald died believing his novel was a failure."|
Forget, comparing this book with this film. The camera is not a typewriter. "Choice is message" says McCullen. Farrell surprising great, Redford work is splendid, when one contrasts, the ambiguous paradoxical character. Derr does his best, with what he is given, Sam Waterson as the closeted gay narriator, is the star of the film. Black is at her best, and again it is her husband, Mr. Wilson, who gets the Oscar. The great tragedy, is that F.Scott Fitzgerald, died, thinking his novel was a failure. It was recently named on the the top 100 books of literature, in the English language and is still considered, "the" finest novel to be written in America. What a tribute to American dream, post ww1,and and our disillustionment with it, as actually taken from the author's life? Zelda (Daisey) remarked to Scott (Gatsby), "you are still trying to fix us again?" Scott's closeted love of Ernest Hemmingway, was the missing mystery piece in their relationship. Like "Maggie, the Cat, in "Hot Tin Roof", perhaps, his bisexual attraction to Ernest drove Zelda insane. Zelda died in an asylum, and only her dancing slippers were found... If Gertrude Stein, spoke of their gay attraction, why didn't Ernest and Scott recognize it? Do we need to know? The Great Gatsby, even on film, still casts its spell....the childlike meeting at the cottage tea party....and the shower of silk shirts...still draws a sad smile from me, and a tear for us all. Nelson Riddle's selection of period music says more about Gatsby's misperception of his love for Daisey, that the camera did. ..."what will I do...lovely touch of classy despair. They are writing a broadway play and perhaps, the musical someday? Thank God the story was written for us all to experience. Film or book its a great ride...

||"OK, its never going to be the BOOK..A-,as a film"|
Let's talk reality. Its a camera not a typewriter. This 1974 version on film, is the best yet. Redford, Farrell, Waterford, Dern carry this film with dignity, integrity, and blood, sweat and tears...give em their honors. The real discussion, should be, that F Scott Fitezgerald, died, believing this book, had failed. Recently, The Great Gatsby was named one of the 100 most important pieces of literature in the English language. And, still is regarded, perhaps,as the "greatest" All American Novel, to come out of this land. Zelda, Scott's wife, remarked when reading TGG, 'still trying to fix us?" True, most of his writing is about trying to "fix" his insane marriage with Zelda. Being unconscious, of his gay love for Hemmingway, may be the odd piece of their puzzle, that drove them crazy? If Gertrude Stein noticed it, they most likely were emeshed paradoxically, in their closeted sexual mode. Clear air turbulence emotionally? Even Nick, the Gatsby's neighbor and Daisey's cousin,is presented as a closeted gay man. Regardless, of the backstory, the scene at the tea party meeting, and silk shirt scene, still touchES my heart, with a tearAND A SAD smile. Nelson Riddle got a Oscar for the music mix, which says more than the camera about the quiet desperation of Gatsby. And Mr. Wilson, the mechanic, got an Oscar as well. Redford creates the best Gatsby, I have seen yet. Farrell was serious. Sam Waterson, got the Oscar I believe. Worth your time and its a good example of their times, mood and a slice of their metaphysical river. Bravo to them all, especially, to Scott and Zelda, and Ernest, for living it for real.

||"BOOK IS MAGICAL, BUT THIS FILM IS BEAUTIFUL AND A MUST SEE.|
Yeah, it could not capture the spellbinding magic of the book, but its still a brave attempt to share it on the screen. I have seen this film 20 times, and like it even better as time goes by. A slice of the river. Be patient with it and it carries it own magic. Fritzgerald would have enjoyed it, regardless. Sarge out here in the Colorado Rockies. Longmont

This movie doesn't hold a candle up to the book. I was so displeased with how it was made. Boo to this movie and those who liked it. Even if you hadn't read the book it sucked as a movie. Wana watch a real movie go see Power Rangers, The Movie.
