Genuine Houserockin' Christmas
$17.39 In live performance, N.Y.C. drummer Jim Black can't help but grab a lion's share of the audience attention from his bandmates. Even in ensembles led by such stellar players as Dave Douglas, Tim Berne, Ellery Eskelin, and Chris Speed, his percussive pyrotechnics are simply riveting, and one wonders whether those bandleaders have noticed the many instances when everyone's eyes are locked on the guy back there thrashing away on the skins and adding coloristic flourishes with a host of oddball paraphernalia. Fans of post-bop are among those who sit up straight and take notice; yes, he has caused even trad jazz jaws to drop. Black now has his first CD out on the estimable Winter & Winter label, and he's pulled a bit of a fast one on the jazz crowd -- this skews away from being a jazz record, even an avant jazz record, much of the time. Black sometimes tips his hi-hat to the type of music his jazz-focused fans might expect; there may be some modern creative experimentation as practiced by Berne or Eskelin, but the avant Balkan jazz of Tiny Bell Trio or the Mediterranean-influenced groovefest of Pachora is not much in evidence at all. This is closer to Black's work with Chris Speed's yeah NO or the Human Feel collective, but even rockier, or at least post-rockier, than either of those. And, whether intentionally or not, Alasnoaxis even draws a bit from the annals of prog and art rock, with Icelandic electric guitarist Hilmar Jensson throwing a few Robert Fripp and David Torn influences into the mix now and again (certainly taking this group farther from the territory where one would find Brad Shepik). Wisely, Black seems to understand that an album such as this can't rely on his percussive skills alone; the kinetic excitement of his live performances won't transfer 100 percent to the CD format, so composing and arranging ...

Genuine Houserockin' Christmas
$16.95 Proper presents a chronological survey of recordings made by Tiny Bradshaw between September 19, 1934 and July 25, 1951 for the Decca, Regis, Manor, Savoy and King labels. The material reissued on this double disc traces a stylistic progression from swing to bop to R&B. Tiny Bradshaw's early Decca recordings, made in New York during September and October 1934 are dominated by the leader's vocals. Remastered with reverb, these energetic stomps sound something like records of a similar vintage made by Taft Jordan and the Washboard Rhythm Kings. One thing about young Bradshaw: he seems to have been almost entirely incapable of subtlety. On most of these early records he sings loud and fast, scatting himself breathless and carrying on, going off like a cap pistol over and over again; in live performance, Bradshaw danced and cavorted like Cab Calloway. The band contained trumpeter Shad Collins as well as reedmen Russell Procope and Happy Caldwell. Bradshaw hollers through "Ol' Man River" in a manner similar to Bob Howard or Putney Dandridge. Bradshaw's 1944 ...

Genuine Houserockin' Christmas
$25.35 As with many comprehensive pre-1940s blues sets, especially those devoted to artists who recorded on the old Paramount label, the five-CD All the Published Sides set is both a godsend and a study in frustration. Paramount wasn't known for its high-quality pressings when it was in business, and its bankruptcy in the early '30s and the destruction of its masters completed the picture, as far as sound quality. That said, this set is a modest improvement over Document Records' various Blind Blake CD issues of the late '80s, as well as being significantly cheaper; there's still plenty of noise on some of the tracks, and even the third version of "West Coast Blues" -- the best-sounding side on disc one -- contains some minor noise and slight distortion. This pattern is repeated throughout the 110 sides, very clean-sounding 78s juxtaposed with what must be the most abominable condition sources imaginable. Nowhere is this more frustrating than what ought to be a highlight of the entire set, "Papa Charlie and Blind Blake Talk About It, Pt. 1" and "Papa Charlie and Blind Blake Talk About It, Pt. 2," pairing the almost primordial ...
